So how exactly is DC going to implement school vaccine mandate next year?

The vaccine is still under emergency approval for kids 5-11. Are you all assuming that changes before September? It could honestly go either way given the reluctance of some panel members to approve even the EUA. The message upon approval was “we want to give parents the option of vaccinating kids in this age group.” DC really jumped the gun in trying to mandate it. Unless/until there is final approval AND the rhetoric changes to “you should vaccinate your child”, there’s no way they will enforce this mandate.

And really, there’s every likelihood that when the grant final approval snd start recommending it, we will start treating it like the flu shot. Which is optional and many parents don’t bother because it requires that you affirmatively seek it out (unless your kid just happens to have an annual appointment along the time it is released). Covid also has strong seasonality, like the flu.

I’m fully vaccinated and boosted so actually no I don’t care about case numbers. Most are completely benign and I don’t think it’s an important public health measure for policy choices at this point.

There’s plenty of information about community vaccination rates, Covid risk in kids and transmission levels in schools, from which many people can infer they do not need to know their school’s vaccination rate.

What?? The city has free vaccine clinics in every ward! There is no access issue based on race. There is tons of science based information being shared in all wards about the vaccine.

It is not a civil rights issue it is a health issue. There is a long list of vaccines you must have for school. If your kid has gotten the other ones there is no religious exemption for not getting the covid vaccines. Get it or find a private school.

Check the vaccination rates in the city or in your ward. That should be enough to inform whatever decisions you make. Individual school level vaccination rates are not necessary.

Why do people think that the vax rate in school is so poor. My ward 1 school it’s over 70% and that I know from asking parents.

The city vaccine rate is 75% for all eligible individuals (so people over 5). Why would it be lower among kids?

DC’s vaccine website hasn’t been accurate for ages. I know the casss at my school don’t line up.

Have the school mask mandate removed when a school reaches a certain percentage of fully vaccinations.

This is an important point. Mandates assume that the vaccine will be fully approved.

Correct. Vaccine resistance in DC is mostly due to 1)ignorance---about the value of vaccine, side effects, even how to find it, etc. 2)some fear of it being a medical experiment 3)general life chaos--vaccination is not a top priority for some that are homeless, addicts, etc.

The first two are generally overcome by 1)ideally a long-term relationship with a PCP (which is ideal and makes vaccination very easy 2)some solid education--maybe over the course of 1-2 interactions.

It's nothing like dealing with the anti-vax types or MAGA types.

Agree and I think with kids a big difference will be when it just becomes a rote part of an annual checkup or the vaccines they get in the fall. For a while you couldn't even get the pediatric vaccine at our pediatrician's office -- you had to go to a vaccine clinic. I think when it becomes a shot, like the flu shot, that you just get from your regular doctor's office, we'll see much higher intake. Kids see doctors a lot more frequently than most adults, so going through that point of contact makes so much sense.

The community vaccination rate which is near 70% does not correlate to the school vaccination rate. Some schools with majority higher socioeconomic families are in the 70’s while other schools, more likely lower SES are way lower than 29%, and that is why you get a total of 29% in the city.

I don’t think this is the case for a majority of unvaccinated under the age of 11. I think families are very wary about the new vaccine. I also don’t think DCPS will do anything about it. And quite frankly as a resident I would be up in arms if half the kids were denied in person schooling last year because of this vaccine mandate.
