So how exactly is DC going to implement school vaccine mandate next year?

My DH and I are very hesitant about getting our kid vaccinated. They are still under 5 so we don’t have to worry about pressure yet. I work at a high school with high (self-reported) vaccination and booster rates and omicron ripped through the school. All of the kids just sat at home for 10 days, maybe feeling a bit sick for one or two of them. Vaccines just don’t seem to prevent spreading the disease in the way I would want it to before giving my very young child a brand new shot.

So the virus ripped through your highly vaccinated workplace and those infected had minimal symptoms? Sounds like a ringing endorsement for the vaccine working then. We were never told the vaccine would mean you can’t get Covid, but we we told it would minimize the effects on you and it sounds like it did just that.

Aw honey please read more current info on the vaccine when making decisions for your family. That’s from July 2021…

Sad to say (and in President’s Day at that) but please don’t quote Biden or Trump on anything Covid.

PP said we were never told that, so the date of when he said it is relevant.

I imagine she meant by the medical community.

That was accurate when it was said. Shit changes when your dealing with a mutating virus and a gaggle of idiots who refuse to get vaccinated.

LOL, the mutation came from other countries and had nothing to do with MAGAs or Hoteps.

I have no basis for believing this, but it sounds good, doesn’t it?

I don’t think this is the case for a majority of unvaccinated under the age of 11. I think families are very wary about the new vaccine. I also don’t think DCPS will do anything about it. And quite frankly as a resident I would be up in arms if half the kids were denied in person schooling last year because of this vaccine mandate.

Frankly, as a resident and parent, I would be up in arms if ignorant AF people like PP endanger kids and disrupt education for students by evading or promoting evasion of vaccine mandates.

Okay. You are in the minority. The optics of a vaccine mandate won’t fly. And they aren’t endangering your kids if they are vaccinated.

I think you’re over-estimating the number of people against vaccine mandates.

Among parents of DCPS students? I don’t think I am. Please remember the vast majority of MC and UMC parents in DC do not send their kids to DCPS schools. They use charters or private schools.

This, the majority of DCPS schools, especially the title 1 schools, is going to be a big mess in terms of unvaccinated kids and the biggest achievement gap DC likely has ever seen.

We know that vaccine hesitancy is linked to socioeconomic class in DC just as we know that the poorest academic performers are linked to socioeconomic class. So it’s not surprising that DC data shows that the poorest performers suffered the most learning loss in DC.

My nephew who is 6 and vaxxed was sick for 10 days with it. He infected his parents, and they infected friends. All boosted. All sick for a week, and missed a lot of work. A colleague and distant cousin just got out of the hospital both unvaxxed. One was in 10 days, another 14 and both still suffering and on supplemental oxygen.

So, not everyone is having mild reactions, but they could be a whole heck of a lot worse. Vaccines are doing their job. I really don’t understand wariness for a vaccine that hundreds of millions have taken. I get not doing for political reasons, but not wariness.

My wariness is my child is very young and this feels like it will be pushed through for political reasons, not health reasons. Anyone who says differently hasn’t been paying attention to the approval process for vaccines.

I am not worried about my child getting seriously I’ll from Covid anymore than I am worried about her getting very ill from the flu or pneumonia.

People need to realize that the world is one big clinical trial with the vaccines. Millions, likely billions, of adults have gotten the vaccine, and if there was any really serious short term effects of the vaccine, we would know it by now.

We are fortunate in this country with access to the best vaccines for Covid which is the mRNA vaccine. DC has done a tremendous vaccine program with easy access with pop ups in every ward, outreach to community churches, knocking on doors, and huge prizes such as cars, scholarships, gift cards to get the vaccine in the poorer wards. Access and convenience has not been the issue here. I doubt that DC will get anywhere even near to 50% for the 5-11 group like OP predicts.

I’m in the medical field. The game has changed for the approval process for the vaccine with these new therapies. You don’t need time to grow things like the old way. You now have a more efficient process where your own cells make the antigen. It’s much more of a natural process and much lower risk of adverse effects, allergic reactions, etc….

Actually it came from the UK where they also have idiots.

How old are your colleague and distant cousin? If they are both over 11 years old, what’s the point of your examples?
We’re talking about KIDS SPECIFICALLY being forced to take a vaccine for a disease that usually doesn’t affect them. DH and I were isolating at home with our kids when we tested positive for covid in January (both having cold symptoms, both fully faxed), and one of our kids tested positive in a week (symptom freed, not even a sniffle), and the second NEVER even tested positive (and boy, did we test her often). So what’s the point of these examples, your and mine?

We should tie it up masks. Fully vaccinated children do not need to mask. Everyone else has to. You must show proof of vaccination.

Fine with me as long as we exempt ineligible (<5) children.
