Wuhan virus (coronavirus) arrives in the USA

More from CDC:

What to Expect
More cases are likely to be identified in the coming days, including more cases in the United States. Given what has occurred previously with MERS and SARS, it’s likely that person-to-person spread will occur, including in the United States.

Glad I bought masks

Guaranteed that people that travelled to other countries from Wuhan and other areas of China recently are keeping their mouths shut, especially college students coming back from Xmas break. If they feel sick and they go to the clinic, they very well might lie so they don't feel like pariahs. Many will still attend classes especially in the early stages of the virus. Wait for it.

At the moment, even the CDC is not sure how the coronavirus is capable of transmitting between human.

As someone you are scanning for, i prob eat at places like gastric pubs and restaurants around town and thenplaces Cava, costal flats, burger joints, pizza places, Thai, sushi etc than Chinese food. You will prob find me at wegmans whole foods or farmers market vs Costco. And I also need to pump gas so I will be touching the pumps. I do go to Walgreens and cvs. I also take Uber or Lyft when I don’t feel like driving. Does that help?

You can get as mad as you want at PP, but here's the reality: A dangerous virus has broken out in China and some of those people are traveling here to the states. That is going to make some people nervous. My neighbor is Chinese, was in China and came back today and immediately self-isolated and plans to for the next two weeks. I'm going to venture a guess that she's the exception. Put yourself in someone else's shoes who doesn't know you and where you've been.

Can PP even differentiate Chinese from other Asian populations?

My 67 year old mother told me that she felt self conscious bc she is Chinese. Funny thing that she never been to China. I’m not mad. Truth is you don’t know where Asian Americans have been so don’t judge esp since you can’t tell the difference between Asians.

Also I’m just informing you so you have the best info. In my generation we don’t hang out or eat Chinese food every day. Bye you are safe at the pumps bc I don’t touch 85 or 87. My car would spit up that grade.

First, "not sure how the ...blah blah". They did not say that. They have never said that. They have said "there have been no human-to-human transmissions IN THE USA" as of yet, and they said they were unsure about the virus being infectious during the incubation period but they have not said they are unsure about how the coronavirus is capable of transmitting between humans. https://www.cdc.gov/media/releases/2020/t0127-coronavirus-update.html

Second, Costco, BJ, Chinatown and most Chinese restaurants here do not have a >% of Chinese than pretty much any other place in DC. Few of those are populated by Chinese who have recently been in the Mainland or associated with recent arrivals. Most are local Chinese-Americans at those places. In addition, most Chinese don't live in Chinatown, nor do they eat in the miserable excuses for Chinese restaurants that are around here. Some restaurants are more popular (i.e. in Rockville for example) but very few are majority Chinese.

If you want places with lots of Chinese recently on the Mainland, you should avoid: The Mall, The Smithsonian Museums, Georgetown, and all of the Universities in the DC area. These are places where you will see a considerable number of Chinese nationals who have recently arrived from China.

Ok, np. But it’s ridiculous to think isolation from Chinese people in public will help. All those travelers were on planes with people not of Chinese descent. I just flew back from Chicago, possibly sitting beside someone who flew in from LA, who ate beside someone at the airport who flew in from China.

There’s really no way of knowing until they figure out how it is spread.

I’m guessing close proximity to an active case (coughing, sneezing, etc).

No new news today - two other suspected cases in VA ruled out.

FWIW - I teach at GMU, and a student reached out apologizing for missing first class last week after getting stuck in China due to the virus. I'm still showing up to work. Just taking minor precautions - lots of hand washing.

I'm either sane or an idiot. Verdict is still out.

GMU said the student does not live on campus and is in self isolation

As well you should. The arrogance of some people who spout their ideals then get mad when others don't accept them as gospel.

That makes sense bc sick ppl even Chinese don’t want to get her/his friends sick. Or others he or she may not know. Who really wants to purposely spread sickness?

Again, it doesn't matter. The reality is, when you are talking about a deadly virus, you're not going to be at your intellectual best. End of.

True. So calm down. Maybe an American Chinese will give you a mask when you need it. Or a MRE.
