Another armed carjacking in DC

Anonymous
There was yet ANOTHER armed carjacking in DC yesterday - in broad daylight, just blocks from the Tenleytown Metro, a popular park, public library, and several schools. It occurred at the intersection of Chesapeake and Belt Road NW at 11:20 am. I am so tired of the rise in crime and the DC government's ambivalence to it.

Has anyone contacted their councilmember and received a satisfactory response? Cheh is my member and I am planning to write but would love any BTDT advice from those who have voiced concern before. I don't want the letter to be met simply with an eyeroll and "what do you want us to do about it" attitude.

With the amount of resources this city has, no one should have to consider the likelihood of violent crimes when they are going about their business and sending their kids to school.

Thanks for posting, OP. Had not heard about this latest incident.

I wrote Cheh several weeks/ months ago and received (promptly, of course) this "but overall crime in DC is down" response:

MPD continues to work to address street crime in the District and Ward 3, including through its car-jacking task force, which has resulted in the arrest of dozens of individuals since its implementation, as well as the license plate reader program, which assists in identifying vehicles of interest. Although there have been some more high-profile incidents recently in the Ward, the vast majority of crime in the Ward is low-level non-violent offenses, such as shoplifting or theft from autos. And, based on DC Crime data, over the last 5 years, total crime in Ward 3 is actually down, from 9,413 incidents from July 2011 – July 2016, to 8,723 incidents from July 2016 – July 2021. All violent crime in Ward 3 is down over the last five years as well (from 469 to 374). We continue to work with Commander Bedlion and our 2nd District officers to combat all criminal activity in the Ward.

^^^ Pretty bad response from Cheh when the data is clear that car jackings and homicides are up significantly. Not a good look to excuse crime.

I don't think I've ever seen someone lump all crimes for two sequential five year periods into two bins for comparison purposes. There's got to be a reason for that in the annual data. I assume it is to deemphasize the recent few years.

I remember reading once that to understand where crime really is in a city, look at the homicide rate. That cannot be hidden. But any other crime can be categorized into something less scary or even a non-crime (a robbery is suddenly a "lost item")-- or just never reported.

I don't believe, and I don't think anyone else does, that crime is down in DC. I think people are giving up reporting it or the data is being heavily massaged. For me personally, we have had so many packages stolen in the last 2 years that we just don't report them anymore. What's the point? Package theft is basically de-criminalized in DC. We also had someone steal car parts from us (which rendered the car unusable for a month) and, to this date, we have had no response to inquiries at the station about the case. We had video footage of the crime being committed and offered it, and it was declined.

It's just really concerning to me. There's just a sense general lawlessness that I have never experienced in DC. It's half that it seems like the cops don't want to do their jobs and half that people are starting to view crime as some type of force of nature-- nothing to be done about it, just try to not let it happen to you. And if something does happen to you, it must be your fault or you really should think more about the person who committed the crime.

We need to get rid of cheh and most of the city council. They do not care about protecting residents. And there is no accountability. Yet we pay sooooo much in taxes. I'm a multi generational dc resident. I am seriously considering moving. What services do we get for our money? Not much. Washington itself is a beautiful city but with tent cities popping up everywhere even that's changing. Makes me very very sad.

100% guarantee they’re back out on the street right now.

+1. Didn’t you guys watch The Wire? It’s way too easy to play games with the stats. And the general reality is that once a metric of any sort is defined and tracked, it will be gamed by those who are being evaluated under it. The default hypothesis should be that other crimes are up just as much as homicide and that there are data integrity issues in what is being reported.

It's incredibly disturbing that a woman was murdered in her car in front of her kids this week and not one so-called leader has spoken out about it.

Trayon White was on the news talking about it. She lived in Ward 8

If that's the case, there need to be questions why.

Along with questions about motivations. Where are the cars going? Is there a chop shop or someone who is recruiting these kids to commit carjackings? What is the motivator. I think that is one central question that MPD needs to find an answer to.

Where are the cars going?

Mostly they use it to drive around for a few hours and commit more robberies. They dump it before the plate into gets updated in the WALES network.

That’s good but it should have had more media attention. What in the world?
