Looking to move further out and came across this neighborhood in McLean.
Any insider knowledge? Reputation? Types of neighbors? |
| “There’s nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so.” |
|
I also want to know, how old are the neighbors? Is this bad for young families?
Is this seen as a poor section of McLean? |
The neighborhood was built in the mid-60s, so most of the homes have turned over at least once, if not twice or more. It's one of the few traditional sub-divisions with sidewalks and relatively affordable homes in the Langley HS district, close to the local ES (Spring Hill), and not too far from the MS/HS (Cooper/Langley). It has its own swim club, which is very nice, and is also close to Tysons and not far from Reston. The main criticisms that come up are that some of the houses need work and some get noise from the Dulles Toll Road. Otherwise, they are a pretty nice deal for families. Compared to other parts of McLean, there are relatively few teardowns. Similar neighborhoods include Shouse Village off Trap Road in Vienna (now also zoned to Langley HS) and Potomac Hills off Kirby Road in McLean (zoned to McLean HS). I've never heard anyone refer to any of these neighborhoods as the "poor section" of McLean (or Vienna), but of course people know they aren't the most expensive sections, either. |
| The nicest cluster 500 homes with pool/tennis & elementary school all without crossing a street. Across the street is a newly renovated rec center. 3200 sqft average on 1/3 acre lots. All ready for renovation mostly or occasional tear down. Excellent for young families. |
| Surrounded and very close to—some homes on top of— multiple huge highways. |
Yes, easy access to Beltway and 267 toll/ access road to Dulles Airport. Also now within 2 miles of 4 metro stops (not sure who thought we needed 4). You do need a car if you're not going to the neighborhood elementary school (Spring Hill) or pool/tennis club. |

This is OP! I appreciate the insight! I definitely hope more places here come on market.
Is McLean Hamlet an actual subdivision or more of a general part of McLean neighborhood? |
It's an actual subdivision! That's why all the street names are Shakespearean. You could live on Falstaff Road and visit a neighbor on MacBeth Street. |
Hi, I'm a longtime resident of McLean Hamlet. There's not a lot of turnover in the neighborhood. A handful of teardowns are trickling in. I'm not sure I understand your question but McLean Hamlet is a legal residential subdivision of about 500 homes (all connected with Shakespearan street names). I'm happy to answer any questions. |
| Thanks that answers my question! |
So prepare for tons of noise in your home |
There are 500 homes in the Hamlet. Many have zero road noise. Most homes do not have significant road noise. The back edge of the neighborhood have backyards with a sound wall barrier. Some homes have significant highway sound. But this is easy to determine for yourself. It is hard to have easy access to 496, 66 and Dulles Toll Road without having some houses in earshot of road noise. Like much of McLean. |
Sound walls don’t work. Pass |
DP here. Many of the homes in certain neighborhoods (not just McLean) are close but not too close to the major roads. You have to judge for yourself, OP because it totally depends how the house is situated. |
