What would you cook? Ideally several breakfast, lunch, dinner ideas that can work for everyone?
-prediabetic who is eating lower carb -5 year old but a pretty adventurous eater -“meat and potatoes” eater -“gluten sensitive” eater -plant based eater who eats eggs, fish, cheese, etc. |
|
Don’t “serve” breakfast and lunch. Have food available. Set a few things out, then tell them they can help themselves to anything else they want.
Tell them what the dinner menu is, then tell them they can help themselves to anything else they want. At least one night, set out a few takeout menus. |
| Ask them for suggestions on ready to eat items. Then if this doesn’t blow up into a food sensitivities hatefest thread do a search for each question. But mostly ask your guests directly. It’s easiest. Tell them you really have no idea where to begin. Conversely do b a Wegmans trip WITH them. |

I’d do a “fajita” style night / with all of the pieces separately laid out / so one ground beef and one fish maybe - then a bowl of shredded cheese - bowl of guacamole - bowl of several salsas / bowl of stir fried veggies / and tortillas / if feeling generous have some low carb ones .., otherwise they can just make themselves a bowl rather than fajitas -
You could have chips for the meat and potatoes and kid eaters …. |
|
Breakfast - bacon, scrambled eggs, yogurt, fruit, English muffins
Lunch - salad bar … with grilled chicken, black beans, tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, romaine, two dressings and maybe some quinoa |
I’m actually blanking on breakfast. I know one likes oatmeal, but that won’t be good for lower carbs. Hard boiled eggs maybe? And bacon? I’m just blanking on things I can set out that won’t require me to cook right before serving or things that can be set out waiting for people to eat. |
Oh good - meat and potatoes loves potato chips so I assume tortilla chips would be welcome. Regular taco night with two meats and a couple extra toppings/sides sounds doable! |
m Your dietary constraints literally describe my family …. We do pretty well with the options I suggested / the fajita bar, the salads bar, the breakfast choices If you don’t want to scramble eggs, I think you could make an egg casserole and throw it in the oven when you get up - |

Focus on gluten free carbs like quinoa, rice and potatoes - that’s fine for your gluten free person.
Plenty of veggies for your plant based person and pre-diabetic. Pre-diabetic can skip the carbs at any meal. Kids will make do with whatever - mine are picky and they would find something to eat. Breakfast- scrambled eggs, turkey sausage, hash browns Breakfast 2 - yogurt, fruit, granola and nuts Breakfast 3 - quinoa with agave and cinnamon, fruit, real whipped cream or yogurt |
Hard-boiled eggs Yogurt Cereal Turkey bacon or turkey sausage Homemade banana bread Fruit Cheese Set out some of it the night before. Put a note on the island saying what else is available. You’re not a restaurant, you’re not a short-order cook. If someone can’t make a meal from the above plus the contents of your fridge and pantry, they should be staying in a hotel with a butler. |
| Primarily fruits, vegetables, legumes and beans. Prediabetic on a low carb diet isn’t exactly what they should be eating. Low carb means no simple carbs - no white foods. Whole grains, beans, legumes, fiber - all good. Everyone on your list can eat this. Also have on hand eggs and fish like salmon, tuna fish, hummus and guac. I like Buddha bowls where all ingredients are separate - roasted chickpeas, kale, sweet potatoes, quinoa, lentils, and a meat option like grilled chicken. |
| * And roasted veggies for the Buddha bowls. |
| What are you having houseguests during covid? |
Omelettes are super easy and meet these requirements. It's not no prep, but you could mix a big bowl of eggs/milk/salt/pepper and have several fillings (cheese, spinach, ham, whatever) out and have people make their own. Frozen veg cooked in the microwave with the water pressed out with paper towels in a colander are really quick and work well. |
| I'm on keto whole foods and I'd do protein, starch and veggies/salad for all. Low carb can skip the carbs. So, for example, I make pork roast, potatoes and broccoli and my boys eat everything and parents eat pork and broccoli only. Morning - eggs, fruit, plain yogurt, cereal and milk for the meat and potato person. Lunch is sandwiches for everyone - I eat only the meat with tomatoes or whatever veggie is around. |
