Require proof of vaccination for all afterschool activities not just sports teams

Anonymous
Now that all extracurricular and curricular afterschool activities except team sports are cancelled until January 7, it seems that there is an opportunity for MCPS to require all students who intend to participate in them in the future to provide proof of vaccination in order to participate. Just like the sports teams. Seems this would be a way for MCPS to allow kids to continue to perform (choral, instrumental, dance, theatre, etc.) and play (indoor and outdoor sports clubs) not just the verified group of team sports.

I’d like to know the logic for not requiring it so far.

Because it is an incredibly dumb idea. It’s already a dumb idea that they require it for athletes, since the 100% vaccinated athletes are the majority of kids who currently have Covid.

Does MCPS really want to mandate a EUA vaccine for my 11 year old to participate in TV crew? I will be first in line with a lawsuit and I hope there would be many more.

Because kids can still catch and transmit Covid even after being vaccinated.

Kids are low risk for Covid. Whether parents choose to vaccinate their kids vaccinated or not, will not make a big difference from a public health standpoint.

ZERO kids have died of Covid during this pandemic. Pushing a EUA shot on 7 year olds for no good reason is a terrible idea.

Regardless of whether it’s a dumb idea or not, it’s the reason MCPS used to allow sports teams to continue when they canceled everything else. My kids were lucky in that all of their performances and events already took place earlier in the month so they didn’t have to lose out on anything but I’m still annoyed for all the other kids who weren’t so lucky.

They should require vaccines for school, period. It is time.

Not a chance. The vaccine still isn’t fully FDA approved for kids 5-11.

You want to mandate a EUA vaccine for 6 year olds that hasn’t even been studied on kids for a year yet.

Think about what that will mean for the future. Pfizer comes out with some new drug that they say will prevent the flu. Best and easiest way to make a profit? Mandate the drug be given to every kid who attends public school.

Pharmaceutical companies will see a gold mine. Parents should be very careful before pushing for any vaccine mandates, but especially for kid. That is an incredibly short-sighted view.

And that was also a supremely dumb idea. They should not have shut down anything for kids.

Los Angeles tried to push through a ridiculous vaccine mandate for kids and they have had to pull back.

I guess your partner is the one who's been filling out the forms.

+1 after school non athletic events have been canceled for my DC MS. If they require it for all athletes, why aren't they requiring it for all other after school activities?

DP.. I think some parents don't like that it's still EUA for covid vax. The other vaxx have been used for many years.

FWIW My kids are all vaxxed, but I did have some reservations for my 13 yr old DD who is built like a 10 yr old.

Just require it to attend in person and require random testing to stay.

The other vaccines were also new when they were new...

Totally agree OP.
And I’m irritated that model Un can’t meet in person but the indoor basketball games are going forward—despite demonstrated outbreaks in the teams.
