The shutdown conversation no one wants

“As the partial government shutdown enters its second week, neither party is leveling with the American people about the hard choices required to get federal spending off a fiscally ruinous trajectory.
President Joe Biden and congressional Democrats used covid-19 to justify chasing the mirage of a European-style welfare state without raising the necessary taxes to pay for it. Now, prodded by the left, party leaders have shut down the government in a bid to permanently extend what was sold in 2021 as emergency subsidies to help people struggling during the pandemic afford health insurance.”

[lies about the deficit, and a small slap of MAGA]

Yet Democrats have demanded that Republicans agree to extend the covid-era insurance subsidies without proposing any way to pay for it. The Congressional Budget Office estimates this will cost $350 billion over the next decade. These temporary benefits were included in the American Rescue Plan of March 2021 and extended the next year in the misnamed Inflation Reduction Act until the end of 2025.

The real problem is that the Affordable Care Act was never actually affordable. President Barack Obama’s signature achievement allowed people to buy insurance on marketplaces with subsidies based on their income. The architects of the program assumed that risk pools would be bigger than they turned out to be. As a result, policies cost more than expected.“

[more nonsense re why Dems are to blame]

But I thought we’re rolling in tariff money? And all the companies opening factories here will contribute to the economy and generate taxes. The dollar is so strong. America is going to be BOOMING soon, right??! ….

What gets me is that WAPO totally ignores that Biden significantly reduced the deficit afterward until 2024. Now it's larger -- a fact it conveniently ignores.

LOL, some that's not a fact, I guess it's good that they ignored it.

Republicans only care about the wealthy (corporations and people). They'll hold the middle and lower classes hostage to get concessions - corporate welfare or tax breaks. Then the Republicans will turn on their media hype machine to blame Dems for any pain their constituents felt. R constituents will fall for it hook, line, and sinker. Rinse and repeat.

Yep. Someone needs to be the parent.

The Dems need to remind the public that the repugs have had well over a decade to design their version of a better healthcare system to ACA and have yet to announce a single thought. They will not negotiate ‘later’. There is no later.

Agree. Legislation as massive and complex as the ACA requires updates and maintenance. It was never meant to be something we got 100% correct from the initial roll out.

Because it takes a long time for people to feel that impact and change courses, and in the meantime, people will die.

+1

99% of the politicians in Congress who carry an R or D next to their names are forced to prioritize the interests of their wealthy donors over the interests of the American people. It's past time for Americans to wake up to this reality and force change.

How do we overturn Citizens United?

We can't count on the R & D politicians to do it now that they are full on addicted to it. We could vote them out but that's easier said than done. There is no easy solution. Our major political parties and their wealthy donors have us by the balls.

So the threat of RIFs was all posturing I guess? If they were going to do it I think today would have been the day. Or even over the weekend. They don’t have their Musk scapegoat to hide behind I guess.

Maybe that’s what needs to happen unfortunately. The republicans are always isolated from their bad decisions. When the democrats are in power they don’t make policies based on grievances, retaliation and stoke the hatred for the other side. We need to stop being their safety net. Republicans need to reap what they sow, and the full effect of it. The red states stand to loose the most so let ‘em have it.

It is a FACT. You're spewing fake news. Our deficit at the end of 2020 was $3.1T and at the end of 2024 it was $1.8T. I suppose you're too lazy to take 2 seconds to verify anything. Just lies lies lies. Because our deficit now under TRUMP is $1.9.

So are they voting again today or tomorrow? Are they negotiating at all? I'm not seeing much coverage.
