| Help a new MCPS parent out- what are the main differences between PTAs at the school level vs. MCCPTA? It seems like MCCPTA is forcused on more broader, district wide issues, but I'm not sure how you would get involved with it. Do folks typically get involved with the school PTA first and then move up over the years? |
| It depends on the school and people. Both the school's we've been at have really bad PTA's and they aren't warm or welcoming. |
Yes mccpta is more district related stuff. School PTA is focused on the school. If you want to be more involved with MCCPTA, volunteer to be the Delegate for your school and you'll be in charge of attending the MCCPTA meeting each month on behalf of you school. You'll then report back the updates to your school via the general PTA meetings. |
Basically this. You will need to go to a PTA meeting if you want to nominate yourself to be the school MCCPTA rep. The MCCPTA used to collect dues or fees from school PTAs and host an annual dinner but I’m not sure that they do that anymore. They had an embezzlement issue a few years ago. |

Your school PTA is about local issues (need more outside time at recess, teachers need more manipulatives, community/school-wide events such as bingo, fall festival, book fair, spring party, whatever).
MCCPTA is supposed to be about county-wide issues facing all students, but they've been taken over during the past few years by the Silver Spring Takoma Park crazies. They only care about East County issues and nothing else. And those who matter no longer respect their opinion. The Black and Brown Coalition has more respect County-wide, so if your interested in all children, get involved with this group, not MCCPTA. |
They don't care about the east county issues either. They only care about their chosen things. |
This is something one reads on DCUM, but not in real life. |
| Keep telling yourself that. Why do you think we have a Black and Brown Coalition? MCCPTA wasn't meeting their needs. W schools and North County schools will be next to form their own organizations, since MCCPTA does nothing for them. |
I know those SS/TKPK people are always going on about these crazy things like equity and educating all children! It's crazy because we really only care about our local W schools. |
Is it because they are the only ones participating? Couldn’t delegates from other parts of the county form committees on issues they are interested in? I’m assuming these committees are restricted to delegates but I could be wrong about that. |
Why is it that these white people think they know better what Black and Brown kids need than actual Black and Brown people? That paternalistic view is the problem and its actually racist, but they don't understand that because they only have the best intentions even if they are intent on not listening to Black and Brown people. |
They still collect fees. A member of a local PTA is automatically a member of the MCCPTA. |
This is a false narrative often pushed on this forum. The leadership of MCCPTA has not been "taken over" by SS/TP residents. It is not even mostly comprised of SS/TP residents. And if people don't like how a volunteer organization is run, they should get involved themselves and work to make changes. |
Equity requires discrimination. So yes, it is crazy and racist. And TP/SS support it. |
Which is why you shouldn't join the PTA. It's also why many schools have set up foundations that operate outside the MCCPTA. Every school that doesn't want a portion of it's donations to be used against them by MCCPTA should do this. MCCPTA has advocated for busing and supports racist ideas like basing school renovations based on demographics instead of infrastructure need. |
