Help a new MCPS parent out- what are the main differences between PTAs at the school level vs. MCCPTA? It seems like MCCPTA is forcused on more broader, district wide issues, but I'm not sure how you would get involved with it. Do folks typically get involved with the school PTA first and then move up over the years?
Yes mccpta is more district related stuff. School PTA is focused on the school. If you want to be more involved with MCCPTA, volunteer to be the Delegate for your school and you'll be in charge of attending the MCCPTA meeting each month on behalf of you school. You'll then report back the updates to your school via the general PTA meetings.
Basically this. You will need to go to a PTA meeting if you want to nominate yourself to be the school MCCPTA rep. The MCCPTA used to collect dues or fees from school PTAs and host an annual dinner but I’m not sure that they do that anymore. They had an embezzlement issue a few years ago.
They still collect fees. A member of a local PTA is automatically a member of the MCCPTA.
Which is why you shouldn't join the PTA. It's also why many schools have set up foundations that operate outside the MCCPTA. Every school that doesn't want a portion of it's donations to be used against them by MCCPTA should do this. MCCPTA has advocated for busing and supports racist ideas like basing school renovations based on demographics instead of infrastructure need.
