Why do most women wear capri or full length tights to the gym when not doing yoga?

Both of these.

The folks who came to fitness later in life seem more likely to wear capris. I ran cross country and track, so I'll always run in running shorts, not capris or anything else. (unless it's below 40, and then the running tights come out.)

I think a lot of women are self-conscious about their legs, too. If they're pale or veiny or jiggly, leggings cover that up.

I'm 19:46, and I ran cross-country and track, too, and thank GOD I will never be forced to wear those little short shorts again. So I don't. I'm not built like an elite distance runner, so why would I? I might wear bike shorts if anything, and wear them all the time plus sports bra on my Peloton at home. I have great legs, I just don't love most shorts.

I don't go to the gym to run on a treadmill. I go to lift weights. I'm sitting, squatting, on the floor in various positions, jumping, etc. There's no way I'd wear shorts doing any of that. Leggings, either full length or Capri, give me coverage, stay put, and are very comfortable.

Fwiw, I was a college athlete in the late 90s, and we didn't wear this stuff back then BECAUSE IT DIDN'T EXIST THEN. I wish I'd had the opportunity to NOT wear shorts as a 19yo in the college gym!

There's a shift in athletic fashion right now, and running shorts are coming back in style, along with "jogger" style sweatpants. Now, I have noticed that DCUM isn't on the bleeding edge of fashion, which is okay, but shorts are more fashion forward than leggings at the moment.

I wear both, but I don't wear shorts this time of year even though I am a runner. It's just too extreme to wear shorts outside when it's in the 30s, even just to and from the gym. Overall I prefer leggings because they look hot af and I'm milking this body for everything it's got before I get old.

I also assume many want everyone to know what kind of underwear they’re wearing. Just cuz you paid a lot for those tights doesn’t mean we can’t see what god gave you in great detail. I wear shorts because even though I’m slender and athletic, the thought of leaving nothing to the imagination regarding my ass is not something I want.

I played sports in high school and college. I LIKE the feeling of the capri yoga pants. I don't like being cold in the winter, I don't like chafing in the summer, I don't get over heated. I don't like my legs on equipment other people use (and leaving my sweat there). I don't actually care if you know what kind of underwear I'm wearing. Why are you analyzing my a$$ anyway? Please, get back to paying attention to your cardio while I do my squats and you can just judge in peace.

I used to wear shorts, but I used to mostly just run outdoors. When I got more in to strength training, I switched to bike type shorts. Then I got older, and chubbier, and now shorts are just uncomfortable. They ride up; they don't cover enough; they show too much. Capris ftw.

And BTW my yoga pants are from Old Navy. Cheap. WTF I'm just going to sweat in them. Nobody sees me in them, because nobody cares what I'm wearing. Everybody else is too distracted making sure they look good themselves.

Oh honey, you aren't supposed to wear underwear with them.

Compression for my knee injuries, and I don't want to be in direct contact with others sweat.

Jeez.
-- We do not care if you are a super runner.
-- We do not care you think capris/leggings are slutty.
-- We do not care if you can see what god gave us in great detail.

-- We do know what regular workout gear is. Capris and tights are part of regular workout gear.
-- We are more comfortable in them.

It's not for anyone else. Leave us alone.

I have cellulite too but FYI you and we can still see it with tights. Even thick ones.

And your butt usually distorts the print. I’m not even big but I won’t wear printed tights because it drives me nuts when on myself and other people the print gets stretched out by the booty, LOL. Defeats the purpose of trying to appear thinner even if you’re not s large person!

Zero Fs given.

The purpose is not trying to appear thinner. The purpose is being comfortable so that you are not distracted by clothing issues. I'm not working out to be the envy of women, or to meet a man. I work out for me.

I wear shorts for running outdoors but capris with a tank top for almost everything else. I find them more comfortable and functional when weightlifting especially (nope, I am not deadlifting in shorts!!). If I'm doing a movement where I might be on the floor, lying down, other otherwise not upright, wearing pants vs. running shorts means that no one will be able to see up my shorts. Otherwise I'd have to wear bicycle shorts or other very tight shorts, which leave me feeling exposed. I've done bicycle shorts under looser shorts but I don't like how it feels.

I actually used to wear shorts for HIIT type workouts and switched to pants earlier this year, and was surprised at how comfortable I was. I am also someone who gets very sweaty but somehow wearing the long pants to workout indoors, even in the DC summer, doesn't bother me.

You're right that shorts are more revealing. My husband admitted that earmy in our relationship, when we went running together, when we stretched he could see all the way up my shorts. Like, a full view. He insists I wear leggings to the gym.
