I wear shorts for running outdoors but capris with a tank top for almost everything else. I find them more comfortable and functional when weightlifting especially (nope, I am not deadlifting in shorts!!). If I'm doing a movement where I might be on the floor, lying down, other otherwise not upright, wearing pants vs. running shorts means that no one will be able to see up my shorts. Otherwise I'd have to wear bicycle shorts or other very tight shorts, which leave me feeling exposed. I've done bicycle shorts under looser shorts but I don't like how it feels. I actually used to wear shorts for HIIT type workouts and switched to pants earlier this year, and was surprised at how comfortable I was. I am also someone who gets very sweaty but somehow wearing the long pants to workout indoors, even in the DC summer, doesn't bother me.
You're right that shorts are more revealing. My husband admitted that earmy in our relationship, when we went running together, when we stretched he could see all the way up my shorts. Like, a full view. He insists I wear leggings to the gym.
