What do people mean by White Hispanic?

Jews from Spanish speaking countries aren't white Hispanics. They're Jewish.

i love Canada. Their forms: Anglophone or Francophone, Inuit

US: A literal tree of races, ethnicities, etc. in which a lot do not "fit" in

I'm white Hispanic and I never know how to answer these rac(ist) questions on the forms.

Simply decline to answer.

This is a simple census and demographics question. Anyone arguing needs to go pretend you are a brown Hispanic and try to fill out the census. Then report back what you put. White people are so used to having a box that fits them they can’t wrap their minds around the possibility that US demographic data collection hasn’t been able to figure out non-European ancestry.

Wondered if they could put "non-white Hispanic" on their kids' college applications (you know, for the boost) ... or whether they should put Asian (which is also true, but no boost for admissions, and might work against them).

Both were accurate, per other folks' comment on this thread abt ethnicity/nationality vs race ...

That “boost,” in college admissions, job hiring, promotion, etc., that is really the crux of the issue.

We reward people based on their skin color (Or perceived victimhood).

Is it time we stopped?

Yes because that's what my son is. Why feel guilty about describing who you are?

Rooted in a language. Hispanic is Spanish speaking which encompasses the (white) people of Spain and the Spanish speaking countries in Latin America- everyone. Brazilians are not Hispanic because they don't speak Spanish. Latinos encompasses everyone in Latin America but not Spain.

This is incredibly insulting to the 99.999% of Argentines who are not nazis.

I'm white Argentine. A mix of English, Scottish, and German. Blonde haired, blue eyed, skin that needs SPF in February. I understand the point behind asking for self identification but know they're looking for racial diversity (and whoever decided "Hispanic" was a race was a moron), which my toe headed UMC kids don't provide. It's a crappy loophole, I would absolutely feel guilty about using it.

Because it is ridiculous that the descendants of one European country receive preference over descendants of other European countries. You should be embarrassed to engage in that game.

Nope. He is Hispanic. His father and I grew up dirt poor in Mexico. If Hispanics are underrepresented in higher education and schools want to attract them, good for them. That’s their prerogative.

Thank you.

In the US, the purpose of this identification is really about skin color and the disadvantages that black and brown people face. To use this as a white skinned, European descendant from South America is really a slap in the face for black and brown kids. Even in S.American/Latam/MX light skinned people had an advantage over darker skinned people. If you come to the US and expect now to get that advantage of being "Hispanic" that is quite dishonest.

An Asian person who was born in Africa, and comes to the US wouldn't put "black" on those forms. If they did, you'd probably think it was ridiculous.

Colleges are interested in cultural diversity, not just racial diversity.
