Tom Cruise’s free pass

Very charismatic but takes things to extremes — often when an addict gets off the booze, they go full in on something like religion, exercise, diet, etc. some people just like living in an extreme version. He seems to be that way with both work and Scientology.

But I think everyone realizes he didn’t abandon Suri— Katie rescued her. And I would bet that the divorce decree traded an iron clad NDA for Katie for her getting 100% control over Suri with very limited access for him. After what he did to Nicole w/r/t the kid, she knew there was no such thing as shared custody. Suri just turned 18, I think, so I’m wondering if/when either she or Katie will speak out about all this. Eventually one or the other will likely say something. It’s always been a little weird to me that Nicole doesn’t say more.

Nicole has never said more so she could leave the door open to have a relationship with her children.

She basically abandoned them though, right? Haven’t the kids spoken out and said something to that effect? I understand her needing to get away from Tom, but I don’t ever think I’ll understand how she just left her kids with him and then created a new family with Keith Urban.

Didn’t Tom serve her with divorce papers? She was blindsided, right?

And don’t you think she tried to see the kids but Tom and Scientology forbade it?

That’s my recollection/assumption.

But even if Scientology / Tom forbade it, in the great state of California, there’s something called parental rights. Even if a court wouldn’t give her joint custody (which would be very unlikely but let’s assume Scientology can influence CA state judges), she could’ve gotten visitation. Why didn’t she pursue legal options? Then again, Tom would’ve had legal options when it came to Suri too. So who knows, maybe Scientology is at the root of all this… or else Nicole just wasn’t that committed to being a mom of her two kids, and Tom just wasn’t that committed to being a dad to Suri.

Even if legally she could have gotten custody and visitation, if the kids spend that entire time ignoring her, telling her she is suppressive, taking notes on her behavior to report back to her dad and "the church," etc , what kind of relationship does she have with them? How long would you go through that before accepting that your children are lost to this cult? Her kids were also older than Suri when her divorce occurred, and had been through years of indoctrination already.

I have seen interviews with her where she talks about winning the Oscar not long after her divorce and realizing she didn't have love in her life and that she needed someone to share her life with. She mentioned Keith Urban a few years later and I think that was like a new life for her. I don't think she chose to leave her kids-- they were emotionally lost to her already. Look at the roles she's chosen since then-- I think it weighs on her.

He makes entertaining movies and I think he's handsome. The Scientology stuff is out of this world insane, though.

It doesn’t seem like any other major celebrity could not see their child for a decade, through that kid’s entire childhood, and still do interviews where no one asks about it and do hit movie after movie. No one ever asks him about it and it is just so weird that he walked away from a 5 yr old kid forever.

Because we all wore ourselves out with gossip when the parents began dating, when that kid was being gestated, born, and then the marriage and divorce of her parents. We simply don't have anymore energy for it.

You're about 15-20 years too late.

oh WOW. I haven't thought about Suri in ages. Remember her burn book? How old is she now? Is she acting?

I don’t know that he gets a free pass as much as there’s a general sense of relief that Katie was able to remove their child and herself from growing up in whatever Scientologist cult he’s apart of. A sense that they’re better off without him because of his ideological beliefs.

Can someone briefly explain Scientology? And why is it feared? Anything online goes on forever.

It's a mutual agreement op.

He's presumably has the same NDA with Nicole Kidman .

Im the PP who was semi judging Nicole Kidman for leaving her kids. Appreciate everyone’s perspectives, sounds like it is much more complicated than I thought.

I thought it was widely known that he’s not not really the father, and that Josh Hartnett was!?

If that was the case it would have been a very easy way to disentangle herself from Tom. She wouldn't have needed to do all the cloak and dagger stuff to get out of the marriage.

I’d say his daughter had a lucky escape thanks to a smart mother.

The kids don’t want anything to do with her.

The guy has had three failed marriages.
I love his movies though.

Are you giving Katie Holmes a free pass for alienating her child's father?

Np but...yeah. He is a prominent person in a very destructive, criminal cult. Not all people good. Not everyone needs their dad.

Who needs a nut job like that for a father?
