Why are people in MD so rude?

OP is projecting bizarre prejudice.

People in MD (Bethesda) walk with their heads down or walk past you like you don’t exist. For the record, I live on the Maryland side and am new to the area and disappointed that people are so unfriendly.

Probably because people on the Maryland side are more familiar with you.

In crowded urban areas, no one has time to greet hundreds of people in the street.

I would rather deal with a straightforward NY'er than a passive aggressive aw shucks Midwesterner.

People in MD — gross over generalization, I know — are politely giving you your space. If you ever bother to exert yourself and offer appropriate greetings, most of the time, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

This is how some feel about Northern Virginia.

#2 is the main reason.Germans by and large are the rudest people I have ever encountered.

Truth. I believe driver’s Ed isn’t required and it shows. They just have to pass a written test.

I don’t get your German reference. I grew up in a small midwestern town where most people are of German descent and people are friendly and say hello to strangers they pass on the sidewalk. They rarely honk their car horns. People don’t cut in line. Neighbors know each other and help each other out.

Not really relevant to this thread, but I think native New Yorkers are extremely assertive, but not really that rude. I think think the rudest people from everywhere else are the ones who move to NY and think they’re acting like New Yorkers.

Y’all need to move south. We moved from NY to upstate SC last year and could not be happier. People can be passive aggressive but not rude here. Life is slower. People are chatty. No one honks despite bad traffic (seriously). It’s a better life! Im fatter from all the good bbq but my blood pressure is lower!

Seriously, think about it. Signing off from dispatch.

Pp and I agree. Native NYers are not rude, just direct and assertive.

We do in our Bethesda neighborhood. It’s how you meet your neighbors! When I moved in 25 years ago, the older people did it and I thought it was a bit strange, having moved from DC, but now I make it a point to say hello to the young couples moving in and it’s really a nice feeling to make new acquaintances in a place that you frequent all the time.

Hon, you have obviously have never visited the FB page, “Maryland is not a State, It’s a Cult.”

I mean, what are you doing to piss off these Germans into being rude to you?

Most of the Germans I've encountered are very friendly and nice. A few have been very reserved, and I have no problem with reserved people. I also don't confuse a reserved attitude with rudeness.
