Thank God, I am not a nanny and thank God, you are not my physician. That should have been horse's patoot, not patriot. L |

Point is, people looking for a "flat night rate" like OP is, are looking for a nanny to take advantage of.
You can always find a doormat, but she's no nanny. |
I'm an MB and our nanny has done overnights for us several times. Our arrangement is much like this - her regular salary for the week, overtime for any waking/working hours beyond her regularly contracted hours, and a flat rate for the overnight. Our kids sleep 10 hour stretches unless sick, so that works. If she were up during the night we would pay her overtime for that time as well. |
That assumes she can get a decent night's sleep, while working on-call. I don't. |
I think you just outed yourself as a troll since you are clearly not an employer either. I can't imagine why you would want to read a nanny forum then, your life must be so sad and boring if this is what you do with your time. |
I'm the PP who works with this arrangement. If my employers are gone Monday (8 AM when I usually start on Mondays) - Saturday (8AM) I would make $1752.50 gross. |
That's fine. Our nanny can, and does, get a great night's sleep when she stays with our kids. If there were an occasion when she didn't, as a result of one of the kids being up, we would compensate her accordingly. She's happy w/ the arrangement and so are we. Everyone is free to negotiate whatever makes sense for them and their particular circumstances. |

This is the way I see it.
If a nanny is working an overnight, but has the luxury of being able to sleep on the job, then she is to be paid a flat rate by the family. (This is if the child is older and is expected to sleep uninterrupted through the whole night.) If the nanny is working an overnight, but is not allowed to sleep during her shift, say she is to tend to a newborn, etc., then I say she gets paid her regular hourly rate. It all depends on whether or not she is allowed to sleep or not during her shift. What is tricky is when you have a situation where the nanny is allowed to sleep, yet you have a child who wakes up during the night for different reasons. I.e., needs a bottle/drink, needs to use the potty, teething, misses parents, not sleep-trained, etc. In these cases, the nanny should get paid her hourly rate as well since she is not getting a good night's rest and cannot depend on being rested enough for the next day to go to another job. |
It makes sense. Thank you ! |
This plan is also reasonable and very clear. It's really helpful. Thanks ! |
| I am a nanny who occasionally stays overnight with my charges. They are old enough that they sleep through the night and it's rare they wake up for any reason. I'm paid very similarly to the previous poster who gave her rate breakdown. The only difference is my overtime goes until 11:00 (which is when I usually to to bed) and my flat overnight fee is $75. I don't feel like I'm being taken advantage of at all. Some nannies get their knickers in knots over this and it's so silly. Why should anyone else care what I have worked out with my employer? |
No one cares if everything is fair, but you're only one person. Many more nannies are being taken advantage of. Everyday. |
It's not being taken advantage of. It's doing a different job, and your only being asked and you are free to turn it down. You have to admit if your full time 40 hour a week job was to just sleep at someone else house with their kids while they are sleeping it would be a pretty sweet gig. You are a nanny during the day, you can charge a nanny rate, but for sleeping, if you wish to provide this service, you can not charge a nanny rate (well you can charge whatever you want, but you can not expect people will hire you at that rate). If you want extra money for sleeping and wish to be helpful to the family then do so and accept that rate of pay for that service. Just because you are a nanny does not entitle you to $20 an hour in whatever you do. |
Correction: EVERYONE in this country is entitled to earn the best that they are ABLE to earn. Who do you think you are, to try to cap what a nanny can earn??? |
