I don't feel like I'm being taken advantage of at all. Some nannies get their knickers in knots over this and it's so silly. Why should anyone else care what I have worked out with my employer?

No one cares if everything is fair, but you're only one person. Many more nannies are being taken advantage of. Everyday.

It's not being taken advantage of. It's doing a different job, and your only being asked and you are free to turn it down. You have to admit if your full time 40 hour a week job was to just sleep at someone else house with their kids while they are sleeping it would be a pretty sweet gig. You are a nanny during the day, you can charge a nanny rate, but for sleeping, if you wish to provide this service, you can not charge a nanny rate (well you can charge whatever you want, but you can not expect people will hire you at that rate). If you want extra money for sleeping and wish to be helpful to the family then do so and accept that rate of pay for that service. Just because you are a nanny does not entitle you to $20 an hour in whatever you do.

Correction:
EVERYONE in this country is entitled to earn the best that they are ABLE to earn.

Who do you think you are, to try to cap what a nanny can earn???

Bless your heart hun, you really aren't all that bright. The PP before you is spot on.

That's what a male boss says after his assistant reported him for sexual harassment. "She could have just said no, but she didn't."
Now, why do you think that doesn't fly in the courtroom?

My bosses have asked me to babysit overnight before and I have said I can't. It's not hard to be an adult. Not all of us have persecution complex that causes us to equate being asked to babysit to being sexually harassed.

How is a nanny being taken advantage of if she agrees to it? If she wants more money for an overnight then she should charge more. But if I'm happy with my arrangement I don't see how I'm hurting anyone else.

If you're the happy nanny, what are you complaining about? Rejoice!

Anonymous wrote:As a nanny who does overnights fairly frequently this is the plan that my employers and I have worked out. I'm am paid my usual hourly rate during the day. Starting at the time I would usually be off (4 PM) they pay overtime until 1 hour after the children's bedtime. After that I charge a $100 flat-rate for the overnight portion, even if the kiddos wake up at some point. In the morning I make overtime for the extra hour before the kids wake up, then I'm back to my usual hourly rate.

So it looks something like this:

8 AM - 4 PM: I make $15 (my hourly rate)

4 PM - 9 PM: I make $22.50 (my overtime rate)

9 PM - 6 AM: Flat rate of $100

7 AM - 8 AM: Overtime rate of $22.50

8 AM - 4 PM: Hourly rate $15

ETC

MB here. This is what we did for our nanny who watched our oldest while I was in the hospital delivering #2. She didn't ask for it, but we paid this. It ended up being about $700 for 2.5 days on top of the regular weekly salary. Of course since the baby ended up arriving ahead of scheduled c-section, we ended up paying a larger portion toward OT on the Saturday we came home. Our daughter basically slept 10 hrs a night so that part was flat, but the rest outside of the 8 hr rate was OT.

NP here. Plenty of nannies ask to be paid their normal rate or OT rate for every hour they spend overnight with the kids. Good for them! The only problem is that very few parents--and not a single one I know of--will pay that when so many other nannies and sitters charge $50-100 flat rate for the overnight. So the nannies who think they should get the same rate for sleeping that they get for chasing kids during the day can continue to publicize their full-rate overnight fees, as long as they are comfortable not getting many jobs.

What makes you think they aren't getting all the jobs they want?

Yes, because it's what they're paying. FYI - People who employ nannies don't lie and say they pay less than they do (since I'm sure, of course, that that's where you're going with this).
