| I've been posting on AP threads here for a looong time and this whole accusing host parents of being slave drivers keeps popping up without fail. Are you one poster? Are you a former AP? An embittered nanny? A troll? Seriously I'm fascinated, because you have consistently failed to listen to reason despite many a well-meaning host parent explaining what APs get and what the definition of slave is. I'm all up for healthy debate about the good and bad things about the host parent/AP relationship, don't get me wrong. I'd love to hear the other side of things. But please, if you would, I'd be very interested in knowing your goal in trotting that word out every week or so. |

| Not the slave poster but it is obvious that many of you USE your AP's and you do not treat them with courtesy and respect. From many, many posts, it is obvious that you consider them "The Cheap Help," and you can get away with a lot of crap because. US Federal and state labor laws are not applicable. The no of hours should be changed to a max of 40 hrs (preferably 30-35 hrs/wk) and they should. Have two full weekends off per month. They should only have to work Mon. - Fri and a max of 8 hrs per day and the extra 5 hrs should be paid at OT. The AP program needs to be changed to the 21st century. |

But you do realize that many of us on here do exactly as you're advocating (easy when we have children in school) and yet still you cry 'slave driver!' It's actually kind of ludicrous.
As others have also pointed out too, I've been reading this site a long time and one never sees actual host parents claim APs are cheap. It's always folks who don't have APs who do. Those of us who host know better. |

They are a lot cheaper than a nanny, aren't they? The entire program should be overhauled to reflect US labor laws. for domestic employees. |

I'm one of them.
Imo, AP's are the same as Mail order brides. Selfish people bring them into this country because they need something to CLAIM (here goes my caps) and use long term for a DEAL they can't get in the US because it's either 1. Illegal 2. No one wants to do it. The AP's and mail order brides come here for 1. A reason to come to the USA 2. Desperation (money, employment, etc) Host families definitely win here. I don't think AP's are beaten and abused like slaves...but they do have very very big expectations put on them at such young ages ...UH HELLO YOU HIRED AN 18 YEAR OLD WHAT DID YOU THINK YOU WERE GETTING? Mary Poppins who does everything, knows everything, and LOVES working for you? Get real People hire APs who are the same ages as their oldest children who may have gone away to school or moved out of the house etc. I just think it's fucked up. And the way you complain about them when THEYRE DOING THEIR BEST isn't right. |

They also do it because they know they're getting someone who often doesn't have a backup plan, doesn't have money, and doesn't have anywhere else to go...thus they're stuck in this situation.
Also, yes, I was a nanny. Currently a student again, and working in the medical field. I was a nanny from 17-20 and a live-in from 21-23 (where I felt 100% happy and not overworked etc). I quit a few months because I was tired of interviewing with lazy parents who would rather do ANYTHING than take care of their own children. |

So, your position is because some APs are overworked therefore ALL APs are then? And since you've met some lazy moms, then ALL moms are lazy?
Talk about stereotyping. Would you like us to do that to you? All nannies talk all day on the phone. All nannies aren't smart enough to find other jobs, so they nanny. All nannies hit their charges or murder their charges. Not true? Hmm...following your logic, it is. Does it feel good to hear that? Grow up and troll somewhere else. |

21:33 I'm not a troll. Just because you don't like what I'm saying doesn't mean I'm a troll. Perhaps you're too old to know what an internet troll is. I'm stating real opinions. Not ALL mom's are like that. However, all of the parents I was interviewing for were fucking AWFUL. And I believe a lot of the host moms who are "posting their concerns" are awful as well. No one likes to talk on the phone all day. That's absurd. Perhaps nannies are bored out of their mind and text/play with phone apps/etc sometimes. Who cares? Would you like us to follow your kids around with multiplication note cards for 12hrs a day? WRONG. Nannies are intelligent and compassionate people. Often they do it as a JOB, not a CAREER, because they're students working on a degree, or can't find a job in their field at the moment. However, we can ALWAYS count on finding jobs where parents will do anything to dump their kids.
Parents abuse and murder their children 99% more than a nanny ever would. Are ya done now? |
