The cost of hiring unexperienced cheap foreign labor? Yea, what exactly do you expect? You getting below minimum wage labor. |
It isn't that I don't expect it, I simply want this "cost" acknowledged. We hold their hands and walk them through this process. I don't do this for my university students babysitters. Yes, I pay them more, but I don't house them, feed them, pay an agency for them, and help them set up a bank account, get their license and social security card. |

12:32 here. Also, take this as a lesson in humility that there's a lot you don't know about how the program is, in fact, well regulated. |
Are you calling helping someone setting SSN who works for You and so You could use Au pairs nr for your taxes inconvenient?
Do You really take couple of days off to set it? As far as I know you can set an appointment. Problem with banking? Au pair doesn't need your help. DMV choose German Au pair - no problem. Those comments only prooves how thankless this job is. |
I acknowledge that even with all that, you are payingwell below going wage for childcare, using cheap foreign labor where the worker doesn't even remotely pocket or even recieve in ALLLLLL that you have mentioned, even a minimum wage. Msny of them even have to pay their airline ticket here. |
Fact is needed here. I have NEVER heard of any Au Pair paying for their ticket to the USA. As far as I know, this is covered by the $8000+ paid by the families. |
Fact: CCAP charges AuPaird a $1500 program fee after match. What exactly do you think this program fee covers? A plane ticket. So if you look at it in ss a whole an AUPair nets $171/week. Not even $200. |
Some Frank is gaining 8$/h for cutting grass. How would You compare job Au Pair to this? |
Frank has to pay for his own phone, own place to live and utilities, a car, car maintenance, car insurance if he has to drive to the grass cutting job, all the food he eats - all paid for with the $8 per hour (gross pay) job. AP do not have these expenses and it is net take home pay (not gross). |

Yes, this. Plus Frank doesn't get $500 per year for education, assistance in setting up bank account, getting social security card, or applying for driver's license. But yet, the slave posters NEVER acknowledge any of these costs. |
Frank is 11 years old boy ![]() |
"Frank is 11 years old boy ."
Exactly. Frank is an 11 years old boy who is mowing the grass of a home he doesn't live in for people who don't pay for his food, utilities, education, phone, car, gas, car insurance, etc. Yes, he makes $8/hr to mow the lawn and nothing else. It is normal. |
Frank gets $8/week for mowing his parents' lawn for an hour as allowance, NOT really pay.
Maybe he does his elderly neighbor's too and gets $16/week. Frank is not necessarily reliable because he might skip a week for playing baseball because he has NOT signed a contract with terms setting out his allowance. |
"Frank gets $8/week for mowing his parents' lawn for an hour as allowance, NOT really pay."
Exactly my point. The stipend is an "allowance" because like Frank, AP is living in "parents" home with food, utilities, phone, car, etc, paid for. When Frank mows the neighbor's lawn and gets $16/hour, he doesn't move in with his neighbors, drive their car, etc. "Frank is not necessarily reliable because he might skip a week for playing baseball because he has NOT signed a contract with terms setting out his allowance." Yes, I agree here that in theory AP is more reliable than Frank. However, AP is often an inexperienced young woman who needs a great deal of training, instructions, follow-up, etc versus a professional live-out nanny. APs "reliability" is extremely relative (ask any HP who has hosted several APs). And let's be honest about the "contract"...in an unreliable AP situation, HP is responsible for dealing with mediation and housing AP for 2 weeks versus in the situation of "unreliable Frank", the neighbor can fire him on the spot. |
