.

Many employers plan for this all year. You might not be able to spare $1000 at the holidays, but you maybe could spare $25 a week all year.

I am living in a country where nannies don't commonly get bonuses. But gifts are usually given.

I work for 3 families :

- 1st : a box of fine chocolates (the same as last year ... I told the mom I didn't eat chocolate)
- 2nd : nothing, but she usually gives me a small gift after the holidays.
- 3rd : nothing. Not sure I'll get something. (I had worked for them a few years ago and she would usually give me a nice gift before Xmas).

All the kids I care for left with their gifts right before Xmas.
I am hoping they liked what I got

When DH and I considered hiring a nanny (when we talked about getting pregnant) we factored in bonuses as the cost of hiring one. That's part of our yearly budget.

PP here. We just give top dollar we can in salary. I guess we could dock salary and make it up in the bonus. Neither of us get annual bonuses and none of the friends with nannies mentioned this so we didn't factor it in...

One thing I've learned from this board is that nannies need the psychological boost of yearly raises, bonuses, and other occasional monetary gifts. Offer a slightly lower rate to start with so you can do this. It's not good economics, but I guess I understand the psychology of it. That is, 3 years with no bonus or raise at $3 more per hour nets you a lot more than starting lower and getting a yearly raise and bonus, but it doesn't FEEL the same.

I got $1200 bonus and a pretty reindeer ornament the kids picked out. Been with them a little over 2 years.

15.50/15.52 here. My MB budgets everything for the year, including vacation, presents for birthdays and Christmas, and everything related to childcare. She knows how much she can afford to have the family use on incidentals, but she doesn't try to come up with it at Christmas either.

Same PP again. I was just given a full gross week's salary in cash and a beautiful framed professional photo of my charge and I from her birthday party last month and theater tickets!! I am so glad I left my previous employers for this family!!

However, (this is embarrassing) the check didn’t clear. I said something and she said she’s going to write another check (forgot to transfer funds) but I’m wondering if she’s going to add in the fee “I” was charged for the bounce check.

I don’t understand why I get charged when I wasn’t the one with NSF- but that’s a whole other convo for a different feed.

My part time family (I’ve been working for them for about 4 months) gave me 2 weeks worth of pay (taxed) and a gift. I wasn’t expecting that but am grateful. I sent all my families a flower arrangement inside a Christmas mug and some chocolates.
I've had checks from people occasionally bounce. The bank was usually good about reversing my fee, but if not, I told them I was charged X and they paid it. Then I switched banks to a bank that didn't charge dumb fees like that. Another time I had a check not clear from a family I KNEW had the funds (previous family was of more modest means) and I went to the bank to find out what the problem was and they said part of her name went through the account number on the bottom and the machine couldn't read it. Made me wonder if that was what happened to the previous family since they said they had overdraft protection in place. Anyway...the bank will most likely try to process it again...sometimes up to 3 times, so the mom shouldn't write you another check just yet. And...it doesn't hurt to call YOUR bank to find out what the problem is...it could be something daft like the signature covering a number on the bottom, or the check was eaten by the machine or something that has nothing to do with your MB.

If an employer gave me a check that bounced, I would be looking for a new job. I've been writing checks for many years and never had a NSF. Inexcusable.

Mistakes happen. Once I bounced a check after DH made a large transfer from the account and forgot to tell me or write it down. I never had bounced one in my life before that.

I received $300 and a sweet card. I've only been with them for 5 months. They're buying a home and I think money is tight. I appreciate the extra cash

Our HHI is just under $400K and we gave our nanny $3,000, plus earrings from Tiffanys, a calendar of pictures of her and our children, and a Christmas ornament from our children.
