What is the HH income of the families that can spare 1K? I'm amazed so many here give such big bonuses. We couldn't afford anything near that... -MB
When DH and I considered hiring a nanny (when we talked about getting pregnant) we factored in bonuses as the cost of hiring one. That's part of our yearly budget.
PP here. We just give top dollar we can in salary. I guess we could dock salary and make it up in the bonus. Neither of us get annual bonuses and none of the friends with nannies mentioned this so we didn't factor it in...
One thing I've learned from this board is that nannies need the psychological boost of yearly raises, bonuses, and other occasional monetary gifts. Offer a slightly lower rate to start with so you can do this. It's not good economics, but I guess I understand the psychology of it. That is, 3 years with no bonus or raise at $3 more per hour nets you a lot more than starting lower and getting a yearly raise and bonus, but it doesn't FEEL the same.
