If this is your PTO, it should be a week of paid time off. Hence the operative word "off", you shouldn't have to feed the dogs and cats.

Nanny family is on vacation, this is one of my weeks of paid vacation and I'm expected to go 2-3 times a day to feed the pets. My original job description didnt include pet care but they are shitty pet owners and the dog never had water and far too often they forgot to feed him. It's costing me a fortune to go back and forth every day, multiple times for no additional pay- especially since this is my vacation as well. So stuck here in the city and inwardly fuming.
At least this job ends soon. I wouldn't put up with this long term.

Are you getting paid your regular rate and it's not being counted as your vacation time? Then just go on your regular hours. Say you typically work 7am -6 pm....just go in at 7 am, feed the pets, then just hang out 'till 6 pm when you need to feed them again. Bring a book or a sewing project or whatever you do. Or if there are any nice shops or museums or whatever near your work that you'd like to check out, do that. Or go for a run or walk.

If you're being paid, it's not a bad thing to get paid to hang around reading or working out or whatever instead of actual "work." If you CHOOSE to go back home in the interim, that's your choice and you really shouldn't complain about the gas you are using.

To the OP of this post: If they have said that this is one of your weeks of paid vacation and you have made plans, tell them so. This is not your responsibility. Many contracts give 2 weeks of paid vacation, 1 of your choosing and one of theirs. If they do not want to use it as your paid vacation, then I fully agree with PP. What does your contract or verbal agreement state? That is key in your situation. I would ask them if they want this week to be your paid vacation week or a work week. I would NOT allow them to assume both occur in the same week, that shows a serious lack of respect and and selfishness. You may want to start looking for a new position, can't hurt!

OP, is english your second language? I think many foreigners may get taken advantage of, and that may be the case here. Are you given guaranteed hours 52 weeks/year? Are you given vacation time? If so, is it of your choosing, theirs, or both? Do you have a contract? These are questions that we would need to know in order to help you in your situation.

She said that this is one for her paid vacation weeks. So you think it's fair to expect you nanny to come to your house 2-3 times a day during HER vacation or to expect her to spend HER vacation at work??

PP you are responding to here.

No, I would NOT think that is fair--but did she really say that it is one of her "paid vacation" weeks? Maybe I missed it, but I didn't think she posted at all beyond her OP? And her OP didn't specify? Please let me know if I am wrong.

Original OP of this particular exchange. This week counts as the family's choice of one week of my vacation. I am getting paid, however this is my vacation as well as theirs. I get two weeks total. Having to drive back and forth 2-3 times a day is not a vacation at all for me and I shouldn't have to spend my vacation hanging out at work. It's just beyond disrespectful that I am off only in name only.

Second nanny OP here, I got a text from MB Saturday morning that they were at their destination and not to forget to feed the pets. This was the first discussion at all regarding them. I can't let the animals starve for 9 days so I've been traipsing back and forth. I have family in town because this was supposed to be MY vacation too. It's just all around irritating and annoying to be treated so poorly

OK unless you suddenly learned English between your original post and this one you are NOT the original poster. Nice try though.

^^^ I said I was the OP of this PARTICULAR exchange.

Maybe the OP can come back and clarify exactly if this was supposed to be her vacation time or not

Okay, from what I gather, there are TWO situations going on:

OP of this entire discussion: her family went on vacation. She is being paid. It is NOT officially either of her vacation weeks. The family asked her to feed the pets. She doesn't want to travel and feed them.
To her I say: if they are paying you and it is merely extra vacation, suck it up and feed the pets.

New poster with a similar issue: asked to feed the pets when it was supposed to be her week of vacation.
To her I say: unfortunately, you got a raw deal. Don't make the animals suffer. Have a serious talk with MB when they get back. They owe you more vacation time, paid.

Yes this totally. Thank you for simplifying it. I think myself and some other PPs were starting to get confused!

Tell them that since it is your vacation too, that you will be gone on vacation and unable to feed their pets for them. Let them know that is only something you would do if it was EXTRA vacation time that was not in the contract, and you were being paid your normal rate while they were gone to do that. But if it is your (negotiated in the contract) vacation, you have the right to enjoy your vacation wherever you want to.

She said DIFFERENT NANNY HERE (so it is NOT OP) and then "this is one of my weeks of paid vacation".

OP, learn how to speak English. This is America.

PP, please understand that many communities and immigrants in America do not speak English as a first-language. Please learn some cultural sensitivity.

I would say that I was out of town and for them to find alternative care. That is ridiculous for them to have you pet sit on your vaca. LAME
