Are you getting paid your normal salary while they are away?

If yes, are you asking if it is okay for them to ask you do one hour of work instead of your normal full day while still getting paid for all of the hours? Yes, it is ok.

If no, are you asking if it is okay for them to assume that they can separately hire you for a different job? No, it's not.

Do you normally feed the dogs and cat?

If they don't want to pay you for your work, you can report them. They must pay you for your work.

Report to who?

Will you be paid while they are on vacation?
Do you feed the dogs and cats as part of your job?

If yes and yes, then yes -- go feed their pets.

What do you want? Gas pay?

Is this comma nanny? Anyways, I'm confused. Are you being paid while they are on vacation but they don't want to pay you more to feed the pets?

Report to who?

Labor board. Need a phone number? What state are you in?

I think she is being paid while the family is on vacation, but doesn't want to go in for just an hour and still pay for gas to commute. This is a problem with guaranteed hours; instead of being grateful for being paid extra PTO for most of the day, OP is whining about not getting the entire week off.

I apologize if I've misunderstood, but this is a recurring theme on this forum.

The way I understood it is this is her paid vacation time but since they will be gone they are making her come by and feed the pets

Different nanny here, exact same problem.
Nanny family is on vacation, this is one of my weeks of paid vacation and I'm expected to go 2-3 times a day to feed the pets. My original job description didnt include pet care but they are shitty pet owners and the dog never had water and far too often they forgot to feed him. It's costing me a fortune to go back and forth every day, multiple times for no additional pay- especially since this is my vacation as well. So stuck here in the city and inwardly fuming.
At least this job ends soon. I wouldn't put up with this long term.

I apologize to all nannies who are routinely taken advantage of. This seems to be a recurring theme.

Are you getting paid your regular rate and it's not being counted as your vacation time? Then just go on your regular hours. Say you typically work 7am -6 pm....just go in at 7 am, feed the pets, then just hang out 'till 6 pm when you need to feed them again. Bring a book or a sewing project or whatever you do. Or if there are any nice shops or museums or whatever near your work that you'd like to check out, do that. Or go for a run or walk.

If you're being paid, it's not a bad thing to get paid to hang around reading or working out or whatever instead of actual "work." If you CHOOSE to go back home in the interim, that's your choice and you really shouldn't complain about the gas you are using.

She said that this is one for her paid vacation weeks. So you think it's fair to expect you nanny to come to your house 2-3 times a day during HER vacation or to expect her to spend HER vacation at work??

PP you are responding to here.

No, I would NOT think that is fair--but did she really say that it is one of her "paid vacation" weeks? Maybe I missed it, but I didn't think she posted at all beyond her OP? And her OP didn't specify? Please let me know if I am wrong.
