Different nanny here, exact same problem. Nanny family is on vacation, this is one of my weeks of paid vacation and I'm expected to go 2-3 times a day to feed the pets. My original job description didnt include pet care but they are shitty pet owners and the dog never had water and far too often they forgot to feed him. It's costing me a fortune to go back and forth every day, multiple times for no additional pay- especially since this is my vacation as well. So stuck here in the city and inwardly fuming. At least this job ends soon. I wouldn't put up with this long term.
Are you getting paid your regular rate and it's not being counted as your vacation time? Then just go on your regular hours. Say you typically work 7am -6 pm....just go in at 7 am, feed the pets, then just hang out 'till 6 pm when you need to feed them again. Bring a book or a sewing project or whatever you do. Or if there are any nice shops or museums or whatever near your work that you'd like to check out, do that. Or go for a run or walk. If you're being paid, it's not a bad thing to get paid to hang around reading or working out or whatever instead of actual "work." If you CHOOSE to go back home in the interim, that's your choice and you really shouldn't complain about the gas you are using.
To the OP of this post: If they have said that this is one of your weeks of paid vacation and you have made plans, tell them so. This is not your responsibility. Many contracts give 2 weeks of paid vacation, 1 of your choosing and one of theirs. If they do not want to use it as your paid vacation, then I fully agree with PP. What does your contract or verbal agreement state? That is key in your situation. I would ask them if they want this week to be your paid vacation week or a work week. I would NOT allow them to assume both occur in the same week, that shows a serious lack of respect and and selfishness. You may want to start looking for a new position, can't hurt!
