absolutely.

I agree however the issue with schizophrenia is that you cannot force someone suffering from it to take their medication. Often times with this illness and others people feel better and go of their meds *or* the psychosis can win out and make them think they have to stop taking them.

At least institutions keep the mentally ill safe.

How do we know he's really mentally ill?

Key difference is that the death penalty is legal. To be sure, not for long, but for now it still is.

He was mentally ill but knew what he was doing. Like the Unabomber. If you know right from wrong
,you don't meet the definition of criminally insane.

OP, here. Aren't most people that commit mass murders mentally ill? It seems as though the punishment is really not a punishment at all. He was destined to be institutionalized anyway.

Maybe, it's just the photo of the little girl.

What is his mental illness ? Or what would it make sense for him to have given the circumstances?

I feel terrible for the families of those hurt or killed, but I also feel terrible for the parents of James Holmes. There was a lot of testimony about what a sweet personality he had as a child.

Ted bundy was a charmer even as an adult. Personality is irrelevant.

OP, here. I do not feel terrible for his parents.

There is a difference between being a serial killer and committing a mass murder because you are mentally ill.

Why not? They are grieving the loss of their child too. They had hopes and dreams for him. They look at him and see both the little boy he used to be and the monster that he has become. Think about looking at your child and seeing that.

Not much difference, really. Both are mentally ill.

YES. This is a much bigger deal than just gun control. I could hold a gun every day of my life and never shoot up a school or movie theater because I am not mentally ill. We MUST have better options for family members to get mentally ill people help. Yes, before the guns.

He was given a "life sentence" for killing 12 people ..the Boston Marathon bomber was sentenced to death for killing 3.. Wonder what James Holmes' sentence was going to be if he was Muslim or Black?

What's it like being Muslim? Well, it's hard to find a decent halal pizza place and occasionally there is a hashtag calling for your genocide...
