My suspicion is that something more than just the mentally ill being deinstitutionalized.

There is something fundamentally wrong with this country. There are other countries with lots of guns and not this amount of gun violence. This is why it's so upsetting - we really have no fucking clue how to fix this. It is so deeply ingrained in our psyches, whatever this problem is.
