James Holmes--The sentencing verdict is really bothering me

Anonymous
I am not a big supporter of the death penalty but I do believe he was deserving of it in this case. For some reason, the life sentence is getting to me. With the recent theater events, I have even thought about where I should sit in a movie theater just in case. I am a very social person and love outdoor public events, crowds, and being around people in general. What gives, anyone else that can't shake this off?

Death sentence due to mental illness won't sit well with me either.

This is how I felt. I am a supporter of the death penalty in some cases but this one - if I were a juror I couldn't do it with a clear conscious.

I'm with you, OP. But I can't justify the dp in this case. Besides, what about the crazies that want to die, and this is a suicide thing for them (committing such a crime as a public mass shooting).

But I see where you are coming from, in my heart.

Everyone should be raising hell about the extreme lack of resources to treat the mentally ill. This should have been prevented. Any punishment after the fact is too late and never good enough.

How could one think it's ok for one person to kill others and then kill him as punishment. Do two wrongs make a right?

The government shouldn't be killing people. That's what the bad guys do.

I'd worry that Holmes won't survive very long in prison. They'll be a bounty on his head. Just stating the facts and how prison justice works since there's a hierarchy of evil even among criminals.

He is going to supermax, no one will get near him.

We teach our children natural consequences. I think a natural consequence of taking a life is forfeiting yours. However I agree with others here, Holmes is mentally ill. Lock him up for life, treat his illness.

I remember when this first happened, there was a super long thread about how people thought he was faking his illness as some experiment...and some one wanted to start a fund to have him offed.

SMDH.

I agree however the issue with schizophrenia is that you cannot force someone suffering from it to take their medication. Often times with this illness and others people feel better and go of their meds *or* the psychosis can win out and make them think they have to stop taking them.

These things go better when the perp offs himself or gives law enforcement a legitimate reason to do so, otherwise...this.
