You are not too late. The boys' tryouts will continue through Spring in most cases. Dont worry too much about what's on the various websites. I recommend that you ask your coach now to put you in touch with the TDs or coaches of the teams you are targeting to arrange a tryout. At our club that would mean that your son would come to some practices so the coach could have a chance to evaluate the level compared to the existing team. This actually happens throughout the year, not just in the spring.

If your coach doesn't follow through on this for whatever reason, you should contact the DA TD and coach directly. You may not need this, but it could be helpful to Prepare a mini-resume of your son's accomplishments--a bullet pointed list of good showings by his current team and any individual awards or accomplishments, plus soccer references. You might want to watch some of the team's games beforehand to get a sense of their playing style and level. You can find the game schedules on the DA website.


Are you recommending to parents whose son or daughter are in the same club as the DA team? That is a U12 CYA parent asks their son's coach to ask about VDA? Or are you suggesting regardless of affiliation, a coach for let's say FPYC, would get in touch with a VDA coach about their player?

As for the Curriculum Vitae you propose, are you serious? Have you actually done this? I imagine a TD or Coach for a DA team would laugh this off. A video of the player in games would be different, and I do understand why that would helpful.

The PP asked about DA programs for U15 and up. My response was based on my experience with DC United, Bethesda, and Baltimore Armour academies. VDA is just getting started at the older ages, so the process would be different. You wouldn't need to do any of this if your kid was already at the Club that has the DA as you would already have been evaluated in that case.

As I said above, ideally the prospective DA player's coach will be able to set up an introduction to the DA coaches and arrange the tryout. If that doesn't work out, then yes, I believe it is useful for the parent or player to have s summary of highlights to date to provide to the DA coaches. Not a formal CV, but instead something that they'd include in the introduction email they send to request a tryout. Something along the lines of the following (completely made-up) example:

Played as stariting striker for Team X in the Y league from 20xx-20yy
Team was a finalist in X bracket of Moderately Prestigious Tournament
ODP state and regional lteam last two years
Top scorer in futsal regionals
Chosen for HS varsity team freshman year.

Plus contact info for coaches who can serve as a reference.

Providing video highlights would be overkill at this age unless the kid is moving from out of state.

Just email the coach you want to contact and say your player is interested in the team, ask when the next opportunity is for the player to be invited to a tryout, ID day, open training session, practice, or whatever.

Give a short intro about your player as to why his/her ability level is at a level that the coach would be interested in having a look at. That's all you need.

Coaches almost never turn down an opportunity to see a new player, they are always on the lookout for the next big thing and will look through dozens (including your player) to find that one standout. If they like your player along the way, you've got an opportunity.

If they turn you down to even have a look, that coach is a knucklehead because very talented players come can show up out of nowhere just by their parent emailing. A DA coach should be aware of that.

On the "ask the coach" page, someone mentioned that CCL club only has 6 games scheduled in spring? How could that be? Is that right? Considering having kid play for club w CCL and that seems strange? Can anyone confirm and why only 6 games?

In some age groups--there are only 6 clubs. That's why. One season in CCL2 my kid played the same team 3 weekends in a row.

Then Fredericksburg FC participates in those ages by hosting scrimmagefests.

Well I saw in an age group that BRYC only had 3 games so they could have been part of the problem in CCL2 where they didn't have as many players to field 2 teams?

Strange why didnt BRYC leave the younger teams in CCL or place them in another league? I noticed McLean is in CCL, NCSL and ENCL.

But I think you can also see where BRYC will draw from for setting up matches for their younger age groups -- plenty of quality options

Thanks, see how that works, you provide actual proof versus just saying something. Even if you are "in the know" it is best to not say anything until proof can be provided. But thanks for sharing this information as it really provides some clarity now.
