Christianity & Judaism - Same God?

Anonymous
Muslims and Jews believe in one God.

It's a little grey when it comes to Christians because, while they profess belief in one God, they also believe that Jesus is God incarnated or the son of God. Needless to say, Jews don't believe this to be true.

In traditional Judaism, at the end of days (which clearly has not happened yet), Moshiach - literally meaning "anointed one" not savior - will be annointed King. Jews do NOT believe that this person will be a demi-God or divine in anyway, he will be entirely human but perhaps just a better human than the rest of us. Other streams of Judaism believe that moshiach will not even be an individual person but, rather, an age of peace.

Needless to say, this discrepancy between Jewish and Christian views of God and the Moshiach/messiah make it difficult to answer your question, OP.

I was raised Christian and my DH is a practicing Christian and so are my children, but this is SO OFFENSIVE! How do you know others "fall into varrying degrees of error?" I know your church tells you so and I'm sure you do really believe this but it's central to what I am offended by with all religions! Why don't you just focus on your own belief without worrying about others being "in error." The "they TRY to worship him" is so offensive! Like its some kind of competition. Whatever people who belong to a formal religion think...if there is a god that god is the god of everyone and everyone can worship "him." God will find a way to everyone regardless of what religion you practice. This exclusive smug assurance represents everything I dislike about organized religion. Every religion thinks it has its own special monopoly on god and that just can't be!

Well, lets see what the Bible says on this issue:

John 14:6
Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man comes to the Father, but by me.

So Christianity is very clear on this - there is only one God, and there is only one way to reach Him, which is through Jesus Christ.

God will not find a way regardless of the religion you practice. The Aztecs ripped the hearts out of live infants. That was their religion. So don't give me this crap about all religions are equally valid, because that is clearly b.s.

I do not believe that G-d walked around on earth in human form for 33 years and then was "killed" and "reborn" or whatever the mythology is. I do not recognize my deity in the stories that are told in the so-called Christian Bible. I don't know if that is helpful to you, OP.

Nice welcoming tolerant post.

How is that intolerant? If she believed Jesus was a deity, she would be Christian, not Jewish.

The mocking language: "whatever the mythology is" and "the so-called Christian bible". What's wrong with just distinguishing between the Christian and Jewish Bibles, because there's nothing "so-called" about either of them, they are what they are.

If you want respect, you have to give respect. I'm guessing that anything this disrespectful about Judaism would send her shrieking about anti-semitism or Hitler. So why not treat others how you'd like to be treated yourself.

And it's Hindu, unless we're in colonial Britain.

This is a fascinating subject, but probably impossible to discuss on DCUM. OP actually seems sincere. Too bad a few posters have already been abusive. It was ever thus.

11:00 again. Thanks, 10:48 and 10:49, not because I didn't know that, but because im impressed by the calm and neutral tone. Possible a model for others?

They didn't think it was b.s. They were rather fervant in their beleifs. As were the Norse, and the Hindu, and the Egyptians and so on

Not the PP, but I mentioned earlier that Christians have the same amount of potential of being right or wrong as Jews and Muslims do.

According to YOUR beliefs YOUR beliefs are the only way. You realize that's redundant and doesn't prove anything right? Christianity has as much credibility as Judaism and Islam.

Hey 10:55, you really should watch your tone. Didn't you read Ephesians 14:31-32?

Get rid of all bitterness, passion, and anger. No more shouting or insults, no more hateful feelings of any sort. Instead, be kind and tender-hearted to one another, and forgive one another, as God has forgiven you through Christ.

My point is simply that either Christianity is correct, or it is not. If not, maybe one of the other religions is right. Or, failing that, maybe the atheists are right and this is all a farrago of nonsense.

But what is clear is that you can't argue that all of the religions are a little bit right, there is truth in all of them blah blah blah. This notion appeals to people nowadays because they feel they are being tolerant. But it is clearly wrong, because there is zero overlap between Christianity and the bloody worship of Xipe.

For another view of what was said in the Gospel according to John re: the topic at hand, I would like to point to what Jesus (who btw was a Jewish Rabbi, in Jerusalem for Passover at the time of his crucifixion) said in John 14:2. "my fathers house has many rooms".

Honey, we can go back and forth on high school bible-class quotes all day long. It's a long book, every chapter of which was written in a different time by a different man with a different perspective and agenda, I have the day off, and nothing else to do.

Is there a room for Xipe Totec?

You don't get to define or label what I believe. I can cherry pick whatever I like. Whether it's in accordance with what you believe is irrelevant. You can call it wrong but you can't tell me what to believe.

Sam Harris and others like to argue that if you don't believe literally, you might as well admit you're an atheist. I've always thought this was one of his weaker arguments, because many Jews and Christians think the Bible is an historical record (as opposed to Muslims who believe the Koran was dictated to Mohammed). Not to mention the irony of an atheist telling us what we "should" believe!

I'm Christian and as I read this thread I can only picture God up there with his hands on his face nodding saying YOU GUYS GOT IT ALL WRONG!

It would have to be a large room. Very large.
