| I'm not talking about body positivity, so please don't go there. I'm just curious about the heavy women I see who are so beautiful, so put together. I need to lose 100 pounds, and even in nice clothing, I look frumpy and sloppy. I'm sure there are tricks to this, maybe nicer makeup or a good haircut or something? How can I look more like them? |
| All obese are not created equal. It depends on where they are carrying the extra weight - certain figures are easier to dress. That said, they probably have their clothes tailored - a good fit is essential for looking put together at any weight. |
I agree. Weight distribution varies with each individual, and greatly affects how clothes fit. |
I didn’t look obese until I hit 199. Even then, shapewear made a huge difference. |
| Also, please separate out what you're saying. I am 238 right now, and wear clothes without wrinkles, that fit correctly (not tailored) and aren't faded in color. But make no mistake - I am NOT beautiful. Not because I'm fat, just because I'm ... not beautiful. Even if I weighed 138 I wouldn't be beautiful. |

Melissa McCarthy is looking very good and pulled together in 9 Perfect Strangers. Partly it's just that everything is polished -- hair looks great, makeup on point, accessories perfectly coordinated, etc. But she's also having a bit of fun, wearing bright full body wetsuits instead of swimsuits, giant cat eye sunglasses. I think that helps -- just enjoying clothing and colors and shapes and not feeling like you have to just wear black or avoid something formfitting because you are heavy.
Her character has good days and bad days on that show and on the bad days, her skin looks awful, her makeup runs, her clothes are rumpled. The contrast is striking and could be informative. |

What do you mean by “nice clothing?” Is it Kaufman objectively speaking nice or do you actually like the way you look in it?
Also what do you do for accessories and hair? |

My friend wears Spanx and can barely breathe half way through the day. But she does look really nice!
She is more bold in wearing form fitting clothing which helps her look less frumpy (I'm 15-20lbs over weight and often foolishly try to cover my gut wit blousy tops that create a tent effect). |
It took me a long time to admit this, because my self-esteem is in the toilet, but I AM pretty. Not beautiful, but pretty. But I do myself no favors by how I look most of the time. Basically, I look lumpy and way too curvy. I struggle with makeup. My hair is thick and hard to control, so I usually just pull it back. I do keep it colored to keep the gray away. |
Yes! That kind of style is what I'm looking for. Maybe not cat eye sunglasses, but she doesn't look frumpy. |

I’m not obese, but I do have opinions on what helps make overweight women look polished:
-great skin, good makeup (not too done, but enough so you don’t look washed out or haggard!) -not sweaty, so good antiperspirant and blotting papers -no baggy clothes. Not tight, but we’ll tailored and fitted. Make sure hemlines are neat and the right length. -this is obvious, but clean, unwrinkled, fresh smelling clothes I think overall if you are overweight you tend to look sloppier, clumsier, not as neat (just perception, not saying overweight people are dirtier!). So the more clean, fresh, polished, and “perfect” you can look, the better. Whereas if you’re thin and tall, you can wear a baggy sweatshirt or a giant caftan and look good. |
I've become super clumsy of late, but it well followed my weight gain. Neuro stuff all checked out, but I find it frustrating to play into a sterotype. |
| Just googled her to see....she's impeccably groomed, hair and makeup are clean and natural but moreso the clothes and fabrics she is wearing look rich, high end and obviously well tailored. The drapes of the clothing are what stylists help people achieve. Sunglasses and bags are modern and impeccable too. In real life, this is the look of someone who values shopping, fashion, tailoring and impeccable grooming. It looks like a high bar. |
| Not a person but check out the clothes & models on 11 Honoré website. Good place to start for ideas. Alexa Webb also does a great outfit roundup on her website & IG at friendlier price points. |

I have a colleague who is obese and she always looks really put together. She always has on light, natural makeup, and tends to wear dresses that are solid colors in a-line or maybe fit and flare type cute, knee length, and often a cropped cardigan or blazer with it. And often a nice eye catching necklace.
I would hate wearing dresses every day but clearly she’s decided that works for her. |
