President Biden’s announcement that he was dropping out of the 2024 race stunned a number of White House staffers who believed he would stay the course.

Many reportedly learned of the historic news from social media.

“We’re all finding out by tweet,” one Democrat close to the matter told Politico. “None of us understand what’s happening.”

I wouldn’t be surprised if Joe found out about it by tweet too.

Biden's withdrawal letter was well written. His staffers didn't write it or even know about it? Did Jill help him write it? Or Hunter? Did he write it all himself (does he type or dictate?)?

New York Times online has an article about how his staff found out. He worked with two aides, one of whom drafted the letter with Biden. This started Saturday afternoon.

Because

1) this is a GOP talking point
2) the issue was never his current presidency, it was if he would be effective for four more years
3) She can focus on campaigning while he can focus on presidenting
4) who would be vice president if this were to happen? Now you have your answer.

I read that some of his own senior aides knew nothing about this until they read it on Twitter. Do any of you think it is at all odd that they are not releasing a video? Does Joe even know about this? Does he actually have Covid? Will we see him in public again?
I honestly am wondering if he has suffered a stroke.

They kept their cards close to avoid leaks. Are you new to politics?

Kind of seems like what we’re seeing right now from Democrats - and for the past few weeks - is a perfect example of the Leopards Ate My Face.

Who was the wizard behind the curtain all these years? Obama?

Joe needs to resign today!

Dream on.

No big name Democrat is going to run against the potential first woman of color President, particularly one who has been serving as VP and has the endorsement of President Biden. No one.

Now it's all about the VP pick.

That’s easy. Stable, boring white male with a solid moderate record. Probably as a Governor. Preferably of a swing state. Besides the Governor piece, they’ll chose Biden, but three decades younger. So, Roy Cooper or Shapiro. Bayshear is interesting, but Vance is also going for the Appalachian hick vote (after writing a book bashing Appalachian hicks for not getting out and going to an Ivy like he did— someone explain that to me), so I don’t think he helps.

I would LOVE Gretchen Whitmer, and she could help in the Midwest. But no way we get two women.

Would also like Pete Buttigieg. But unlike Cooper or Shapiro, he has no constituency.

Hogan!

1) needs to be a democrat
2) needs to be pro-choice

Why to people, with a straight face, suggest Cheney, Romney and Hogan on the Dem ticket?

How about running a sane republican?

My Gen Z daughter is all of the sudden excited about this presidential race. I wonder why.

It’s amusing to see MAGAS running like headless chickens.

Ohhhh no it's not - not in evangelical circles. And I don't think Trump surrogates will be able to stay away from the issue. Trump/MAGA already have a problem with women. This is not going to help. Can you imagine Donald Trump choking out the words that's it's perfectly fine for women to make the choice not to have children. Not to mention the evangelical reaction to that. Very rock and a hard place position here.

? Evangelicals wouldn't vote for a Dem anyways, so moot point.

Not a moot point. Trump has a problem with women. If you have Trump surrogates out there attacking Kamala Harris for being childfree you aren't turning out women who don't want to vote Dem but are on the fence for the GOP. And if the GOP/Trump try to distance themselves from this POV you start losing the evangelicals. Trump has already made the hard line abortion folks angry.

By and large this election isn't about winning large swaths of voters over. It's about maintaining your 2020 support and undermining the support for your opponent.

DP. ONE person in an anonymous forum made the comment about Harris and children. Could you possibly be overreacting (as usual)?

Are you kidding? He specifically said in 2020 that he would *only* run as a one-term president. Then his ego got the better of him and he reneged on that. He might have had something of a “legacy” had he kept his word and allowed someone else to run in 2024. Instead, his legacy will be as a stubborn, diminished old man who had to be pushed out of the race.

No, never actually said that. What he said is that he would be a bridge to the next generation. He absolutely never said he would be a one-term president.

He said everything but a literal “pledge,” leading Americans to assume he was only running to beat Trump and would then move on. C’mon, man.

In April, when asked whether he would serve just one term, Biden responded, “No.” More recently, Biden has been ambiguous. In October, The Associated Press reported that when “asked whether he would pledge to only serve one term if elected, Biden said he wouldn’t make such a promise but noted he wasn’t necessarily committed to seeking a second term if elected in 2020.”

So, no, he never said he would only be a one term president.

And the fact is, if the Senate had done its job in the February 2021 impeachment or the judiciary had done its job this year, Biden would not have run because Trump would not have been in the race.

Who was impeached?

The House voted to impeach Trump in February, 2021. The Senate did not reach the 60 vote threshold to bar Trump from future office.

Perhaps if this was against a “normal candidate”, but Trump is a deranged, old lunatic. Now that women’s reproductive rights are in the spotlight there is no better messenger than a woman. Trump ran against Hillary 8 years ago. He has clearly deteriorated since then.

Trump is old! He's old and senile and has dementia. Did anyone tell you that? He's also lost whatever luster and charm he had. His last speech confirmed it. He's tired. He's a "has-been". He has low energy. I don't know if he's up to another four years, folks. He's also a convicted felon and rapist and twice impeached. But even worse than that? He's yesterday's news!

Move over Trump. Put Vance in charge!

Harris v. Vance would be pretty good for Democrats.

No governor is running against the Vice President, who happens to be a woman of color endorsed by the President with a billion dollars in the bank. Not happening. This is a completely unprecedented situation, but it's not difficult to game out.

All the attention will be on the VP pick, which rumors, rumors, will happen soon.

If Harris chooses Mark Kelly - astronaut, fighter pilot, war hero, husband of Gabby Giffords (needed a trifle more than an ear band-aid to survive her assassination attempt), charismatic, good on tv, battleground state - then it's a win. Mark Kelly emasculates Trump/Vance. Extremely good pick.

But the problem with Kamala Harris - when you look at her staff and how quickly people are gone - is that Harris absolutely sucks at surrounding herself with talent. And that is going to be an issue this week. If the VP staff are garbage presently - and who knows, bc the turnover is extreme - this is going to be a problem right now.

If she picks poorly with the VP, it's still carnage for Democrats in November

I agree with all of this.

That's not what Mark Halperin reported. The question is, was he lied to as part of a pressure campaign?

Didn't Bidden say that he would only get out of the race if either Gid Almighty came down and told him to or if his doctors told him there was a medical necessity.
So, does this mean that he is medically unfit to run? Wouldn't that Also mean that he is medically unfit to be President?
Just using some logic.
Unless there was a parting of the heavens that CNN didn't report.
