We’re in the car market for a 3 row, non-ginormous suv for the first time in a decade. We tried the pilot (meh) and the Highlander (tight in the back but lovely) but we keep reading about how awesome the Kia Telluride is. Back in the day kias we’re lower quality/reliability than the Toyota/Honda’s. Is that no longer the case? And if you have a Telluride, what makes it so great in your opinion? Would love to get opinions and suggestions about the Telluride or other cars with a 3rd row that people love.

We went on a similar car journey to you it sounds like. We wanted a useable third row that an adult or teenager could sit in for long periods of time. You’re right the Highlander is tight and we felt the same about the Pilot.
We also looked at the Telluride and the Pallasaisde. While a tiny bit better than the Highlander, it really didn’t offer a noticeable difference in space (we have 3 teenage boys who are all tall). We ended up with the a QX 80. Yes it’s large but it drives well and fits everyone. Don’t discount the big ones if you really want the third row. |
So excited, I’m getting my Telluride on Monday after a three month wait. (I was finally able to get it at MSRP!) I’m going from a Mercedes GLS to the Telluride. My Mercedes died and as much as I loved the brand and luxury, I was tired of paying for premium gas and $200 oil changes. Test drove the Telluride in August 2020 because I happed to read the write up regarding it being Motor Trend’s 2020 Car of the Year and then started seeing all of theses YouTube videos with folks fawning all over them. Test drive it again January 2021 when the Benz finally really died and was ready to buy. Unbeknownst to me the Telluride became the hottest SUV on the market and ever dealership in the DMV was selling at 5k to 12k over msrp (looking at you King Kia and Ourisman Kia Chantilly)! Anyway about the vehicle, Dulles Kia let me keep one for a week to help me decide (did not buy from them), here’s what I like: 1. The third roll is very roomy. My 6ft nephew said it was very comfortable and was easy to get in and out of. 2. Kia Warranty 10yr/100,000 miles (3yr//30,000 for electronics). 3. Love all the safety features. Please google this for more info. 4. Just loved the way it drove! Cons: No wireless Apple/Android car play. Doors don’t auto lock when walk away. For the 2022, don’t like the new Kia emblem. I mean it doesn’t drive like a Mercedes and I didn’t expect it to, but I felt incredibly safe and it had a heftiness to it that felt light at the same time. Being transparent I am getting the highest trim level. I’m a reluctant fan. My dead Mercedes is still sitting in my driveway

| Following…. Lease on 2018 highlander ending. Considering all options. Have looked at ascent; traverse; mdx; pilot. |
No apple car play? That’s a big minus. What’s the substitute they use? |
It has Apple/Android car play but it's not wireless. |

Thanks op we are in a similar boat so will be following closely
We currently have a paid off 2013 Honda Odyssey that we really like and has been reliable, but in a bit of a fluke, the motor/system for the sliding doors broke, and it’s a 3000 dollar repair. Trying to figure out whether to cut our losses now (looking at Pilot, Telliride, Highlander, Atlas) or suck it up and stick with the odyssey for another few years. Currently has about 90000 miles on it. |
| I personally think they have a funny look. Especially the the rear. I did test drive the Telluride & Palisade and I liked them enough, but I couldn’t understand the jacked up price. If your budget is 50k I would go with another car. |
| Wow to the PP who went from a Mercedes®️ > to a KIA. 🧐 |
Yep…I’ve discussed my beloved Mercedes on this board before. It has 258553 miles on it. I want to keep, (this why it’s still sitting in my drive way) but it now needs a new engine. And last summer I dropped $3500 on hatch gate repair, new alternator, a radiator issue and something else. Then in the fall I poured more money into, when I should have cut my losses for new tires, drivers side widow motor repair, $200 oil change and spark plugs. I considered a Mercedes 350 GLE, drove it for a week as well. but after a lot of inner conflict I realized, I just didn’t need that type of status symbol anymore. But man, it drove like a dream as well. When you rev that engine, whew! For an old lady like me, it was like being in Daytona. And I definitely love the hefty look of the tires on the German brands, Telluride fails on this (will be getting the Telluride lifted to accommodate wider tires to duplicate this look). I’m not saying the cars are in the same class, they aren’t. The Mercedes is way better, just not $25k better (for a tricked out trim). |
OP, I will say the Honda Pilot is really nice, just not my style. It DOES have wireless Apple/Android car play. It DOES auto lock doors when you walk away. Has the mechanism to not let you forget a kid in the back ((Telluride does too). Gas mileage was slightly better on the Telluride. Pilot has lots of “stuff” compartments in the front. It’s definitely worth a look. I considered the Pilot when I found out about the mark up all of these dealers were charging on the Telluride and just needed a car. Honda Chantilly let me keep one for five days to consider and to try to make the sell, I had just already fallen in love with the Telluride. |

I looked at the Telluride and on paper thought that was the winner but there was no way in heck I was paying luxury prices for a Kia so that went out the window. If you could get a deal on it that would be a different story.
Pilot had the most “amenities” standard of any vehicle we looked at but it looks like a van to me. We ended up with a new Highlander - look and feel is very nice. Third row is tight but frankly the difference between it and the Kia is negligible (my husband is 6’4 and he isn’t fitting in any crossover 3rd row). |
I'm pretty much in the same boat. Test drove Pilot today. The third seat is very spacious and the drive was really nice. The exterior is sooo bleh. Went to the Toyota dealership planning to test the highlander but I climbed in the back of the highlander and it was absurd. My kids are only 9 and 11 but over 5' and I think that would be pretty miserable for anyone to sit back there for more than 5 minutes. So did not bother with the test drive. Just to warn you. The kia dealerships all have the tellurides priced roughly 9-10k above MSRP. 55k-60k for a telluride seems ridiculous. I plan to go test drive one out of curiosity but no way would pay that much. Might expand search to Acura MDX, audi... volvo? Dont know what else. Feel very uninspired, but I guess the Pilot will be my fallback plan. |
Can you share which dealer you are purchasing from? |
Picked it up today from Safford Kia in Salisbury, MD, (I love it!) but also found out today they are no longer selling at MSRP. However, Parsons Kia in Winchester and Timbrook Kia in Cumberland, MD are selling at MSRP for orders. What that means just in case you don’t know the process, you basically order the exact car you want with a 1k deposit. Then you have to wait for KIA factory to pick up the order from the dealer. I said three month wait earlier, but it was a little less than that. I ordered on 4/19 with sales person. I was expecting to get a 2021 model, but Kia switched to building the 2022’s in May. Kia picked up my order on 6/11 and my 2022 car was delivered to dealership on 7/2. Due to high demand, Kia has really picked up production so the turrn around is much faster. If you are really interested in getting a Telluride at MSRP, check out this forum. https://tellurideforum.org/forums/how-to-buy-a-kia-telluride.7/. Do no pay over MSRP. And for the love of GOD do not go to King Kia, Ourisman Kia of Chantilly, or Koons Kia of Manansas. Hope this helps. |
