Teacher turnover

I'm hearing about a large amount of teacher turnover in our ES. Are people aware of the same with their schools? Or is ours an isolated case?

Upper NW school. We have 8 leaving.

I believe 6 at my NW ES.

I am a teacher and I’m not surprised. I know many people who have decided to leave the profession at least for a few years (mostly women who have very young kids and want to just stay home with them) and many who moved elsewhere during the pandemic and are just choosing not to move back. There is also the looming threat of simulcasting that makes some people (myself included) question whether another year of this is worth it.

OP here- yes, a lot of our teachers moved somewhere and are just going to stay there.

Re: Simulcasting -- have teachers made it clear to their admins and the union that this is a major issue? Because I think its something that could help move the needle.

Are you really surprised? With the amount of people who are open about their hatred of teachers this year, why would people stay? At least if you are a new teacher at a different school, you might start with a clean slate.

The teacher turnover rate at DC schools are really high, you probably just haven't experienced it because until now, it wasn't as high at the northwest schools

maybe WTU should have anticipated that simulcasting might be the consequence of their scare tactics and insistence on virtual options in 2021-22. If you don’t want simulcasting, talk to your union. They did it.

we have a little more turnover in our school due to retirements that were overdue anyway and a welcome opportunity for change. otherwise similar to any other year. teachers made and participated in an extremely frought political decision that heavily impacted their key stakeholders. if they expected no heat, they are terribly naive.

I hear you and please believe I have shared my feelings about being fully back in person since the fall. It’s like screaming into the void. I was referring, however, to simulcasting for next year. The idea that we might not have regular in person school next year is absurd. If I find out I am responsible to teach in person and online next year I might consider leaving DCPS.

So far the principal has announced only three leaving at Janney.
