There’s an effort on the part of advocates to prevent us from mentioning mental health when discussing gun violence or other violent crime so as not to stigmatize the majority who suffer with mental health issues who are not violent (and often are victimized by violence). I get it, but it’s a disservice to society to ignore the obvious mental health issues. Additionally, there’s a rabidly aggressive group of people who think mentioning mental health issues equates to defending and excusing the criminal act. It obviously does not, yet these people control the media response through their social media posse that labels anyone who raises mental illness as an apologist for the criminal. Go read the threads on the SF and GA attacks over in Off Topic. We will never be able to prevent or address the problem if we don’t discuss the mental health issues. [/quote]
