Moms with mombod - did you ever get back in shape?

Anonymous
I am 1 year postpartum and I cannot for the life of me get rid of my stomach/pouch. I peloton or run 5ish days a week and eat pretty healthy but my stomach persists. I am 5'7" and around 145lbs. Pre-kids I was 135. I have had 3 9+lb kids. Should I just accept that this is the way I look now? If you have been able to get back into good shape after having kids what did you do?

Yes but you won't like the answer!

Cut out dairy, gluten and sugar.

PT for the diastasis, lifting heavy to reduce overall body fat levels. My skin is still loose, but I fit in the jean size I want to wear with no problem and it doesn't pooch out or anything. (I also lost some weight, but my goal weight was not much lower for my size than your current weight is.)

OP here - I am pretty sure I don't have distasis. I did the test (lying on the ground and putting a finger between my ab muscles) and they are connected. I just have a small gut/flap of skin that won't go away!

How old are you?

I agree w pp best bet is to cut out dairy, sugar, gluten. Or at the very least cut out all alcohol. It’s more about what you eat/drink than about exercise, unfortunately.

I am 5’1” and 130 lbs. I returned to pre-pregnancy weight quickly after both of my kids were born. But nothing I do rids me of the little extra tummy pouch. I’ve been told this is due to diastasis recti. It has gotten much better (DD#2 was born last May), but it isn’t likely to completely go away.

OP here - well thats depressing haha. I am 37. I have never dieted a single day in my entire life. I work out for sure but never watch what I eat. I guess I should start doing that now that I am older!

Yep OP, this.
Your body has carried three babies...bodies change.
For me, giving up many of the things I enjoy was just not worth it. So I stay active, eat mostly well, and still have a pooch. There are worse fates.

How old are you op? I had the mom pouches disappear but it took a few years, but now that I am approaching 50, it’s coming back. Strengthen the core muscles.

Start weight training. Cut out alcohol for sure and eat healthy (lots and lots of veggies, lean protein, protein at every meal, limited fruit) 80% of the time and do whatever you feel like 20% of the time. It's totally possible to get back into shape. Set realistic goals, it is a long road of staying consistent. It will not be a quick fix.

I had my last kid at 38 and got back into good shape by 40. I did WW and a 5 day a week bootcamp. I am also 5'7 and managed to get back to 134. My stomach fat did go away, but I had some loose skin. It will be so much easier losing the 10 lbs now then when you are older.

Disagree.

Peloton is not a great workout, sorry to tell you. You need to move your whole body-engage all your muscles. Do hiit classes, run, weight train with heavy weights (not power lift, but as heavy as you can manage to get a few sets of 12 in) strength and tone with Pilates (great for core).

Cut calories to lose those last 10 lbs. You can’t control where fat will deposit or where it will lose by not eating dairy, gluten sugar- plus this sets you up for gaining more weight because you feel deprived. Eat healthy and balanced from a variety of food groups and use moderation.

And be realistic. Pregnancy stretches the skin, the underlying layers of fat, and the muscles. Even when the weight is lost it may not look exactly like pre-kids, but with the 10 lbs gone and more well rounded workout routine, I think you will make a lot of improvement toward what you want.
