ACPS- Changing from Hybrid to DL?

Anonymous
Back in December we opted for Hybrid just to cover our bases (assuming DL was the default and we could always revert if things went sideways.)

A FB group I belong to has several members attempting the opposite (switching from DL to hybrid) and apparently central office is telling them no. Emails sent Thursday have not been answered.

Anyone have information about switching decisions?

You can switch from hybrid to DL but not the other way around. Our ACPS elementary school principal told parents at a meeting this week that he is keeping a list of families requesting to switch from DL to hybrid (but made no promises that it would be possible). I still think it’s a good idea for parents to let their principals know and for schools to collect that data and information.

Thank you. Do you know why that is? It doesn't seem fair to ask parents to make a firm decision about the unknown. Many people scared in December might not be now given the increased availability of vaccine.

VDOE says in the FAQs on its website that no student will be required to return to the classroom as of March 15, 2021, so they have to allow changes from hybrid to virtual. A change the other way may be more problematic due to space constraints.

I'd check in with the principal. We indicated we'd do hybrid but I'm going to need a lot more information before sending my kids back. If they are just going to be with classroom monitors for the entire day, I'm not sending them back. We'll switch to DL.

So people may change their minds as more information is shared over the next few weeks, space may be available and the principals may be willing to be flexible. Central Office will never be flexible. Unless the governor tells them what they have to do again.

Because after a YEAR of claiming they were getting ready, and planning, and preparing - they didn't actually intend for kids to come back this year. It was all lip service. So when Northam dropped the March 15th bomb they had pretty much nothing ready. So they have to go with the student choice numbers they have. No time to resurvey, no time to think through this rationally - just an all out panic to throw kids in school.

ACPS at it's finest.

I'm sending my kid back no matter what our grade school says. Good luck telling me, a taxpayer, that my kid cant be in the building while other, nontaxpaying, kids are.

It's got unequal access lawsuit written all over it.

I'm having a really hard time believing all the FARM kid's parent responded to the survey in a timely fashion.

Why would they be given the ability to declare intentions late while others aren't?

Why didn't you choose hybrid when you had the chance - since you seem so aggressive about it?

Why do you feel its fair that some kids can attend school while others are denied? You a fan of segregation?

I think this is true. They're not prepared, despite having time to prepare. According to the admin at our elementary, even if there is room in a particular classroom, there will be no waitlist for kids who want to go from virtual to hybrid--a directive from central office--because they can't work out the transportation for immediate changes, and it would be inequitable to allow the kids who have access to their own transportation switch while those who don't can't. Just an FYI--in case anyone is thinking why they wouldn't want to get as many kids back as possible.

From the ACPS Express back in December: "Please know that we are committed to working with families throughout this transition process knowing that circumstances may change and families may need to adjust their choice in the future. "

More cruelty in the name of equity from ACPS. They always come from the position that things are NOT possible. How depressing.

Do you think there is a single free lunch family that will be told they can't have what they want?
