GFR Falling apart?

Anonymous
GFR parents have to stop thinking their kids are all going to play D1 soccer. D2 or D3 soccer is totally within reach. Players can attain to play D1 but that doesn't mean they will make it. But players should also realize, D1 programs are looking at Sophomore and Junior players in D2/D3 colleges. So, it can be a pathway, but know that the D1 soccer landscape is very different that just 5 years ago.

Who realistically goes to play D2 and D3? Don’t you still have to be ECNL/MLSNext/GA? Or do RL players have a shot?

Many D2/D3 programs have RL players on their roster, but it does come down to money and/or grades. It is hard to make the roster for a highly competitive D2/D3 soccer program, and impossible for a RL player that rides the bench, but many RL players play on the D2/D3 programs whose school is more expensive or have high academic standards.

For instance, for some of these schools the player first needs to be able to get accepted to the college, and no matter how good the player is the college coach cannot help get a player into the school. If your player is considering colleges like John Hopkins, Carnegie Melon, MIT, the first hurdle is getting into the school and more than likely there is a spot on the team for most players that have played competitively on a RL team.

But I will agree things are changing. With the shift in D1 recruitment to foreign players, the change in rules for transfer players, and the new NCAA rules that limit D1 soccer programs to 28 rostered players, there is now a large pool of high-level players available for D3 colleges to choose from. I think the quality of D2/D3 soccer is going to increase and be much more competitive with D1 programs over the coming years, especially for those D2/D3 colleges that can keep their better players from transferring to the D1 programs.

I have talked to college coaches that are recruiting, and they do look at RL players, but they are more likely to find a competitive player from a RL team that is highly competitive from a well-coached academy year after year. Coaches have given me local examples of this and they are second teams from Arlington, Pipeline, Bethesda.

RL kids can absolutely make D2 and D3 teams. Some of those are very, very good too. The issue is, parents (and some kids) are trying to get in position for big time D1 programs at U12 without realizing that they take a ton of international kids. You need to be elite, elite to make the schools people are thinking about when the kids are young. Then the kids get older, still love soccer, and realize they are not going to whatever college and in fact, do not really want to play college soccer. They can play club or IM and attend a school like Tech or UVA and enjoy the "normal" college life.

Don't you have to post a job like that unless they promoted from within? Non profit rules or something?

Just sent out to GFR Club Members:

Dear Club Members,

I want to take a moment to share my perspective and intentions moving forward.

Over the past several weeks, our new Strategy Director and I have worked closely to evaluate the club’s financial position, operational structure, and strategic priorities. Through that process, I’ve had the chance to reflect deeply on where my skills, experience, and passions can best serve Great Falls Reston Soccer Club.

It has become clear to me — and I fully agree — that the Executive Director position requires a leader with a strong business management and administrative background to guide the club through its next chapter. While I remain deeply committed to the success of this organization, my strengths lie more in the programmatic and operational aspects of the club rather than in financial administration.

With that in mind, I plan to realign my role within the organization to focus where I can make the highest and best impact — as Director of Soccer Operations and Programs. In this capacity, I’ll concentrate on enhancing member experience, program growth, and revenue-generating initiatives that support the club’s long-term goals, while creating space for a new Executive Director to oversee fiscal management and compliance.
I will continue serving as Acting Executive Director during the transition period while the club begins recruitment for this new leadership role. My goal is to ensure full continuity for our staff, players, and families while positioning the club for lasting stability and growth.

Thank you for your continued trust and support. I care deeply about this club and its mission, and I’m confident this realignment will strengthen our foundation and help us move forward with clarity and renewed purpose.

Warm regards,

Rich Shelton
Acting Executive Director

Director of Soccer Operations and Programs
