Who realistically goes to play D2 and D3? Don’t you still have to be ECNL/MLSNext/GA? Or do RL players have a shot?
Many D2/D3 programs have RL players on their roster, but it does come down to money and/or grades. It is hard to make the roster for a highly competitive D2/D3 soccer program, and impossible for a RL player that rides the bench, but many RL players play on the D2/D3 programs whose school is more expensive or have high academic standards. For instance, for some of these schools the player first needs to be able to get accepted to the college, and no matter how good the player is the college coach cannot help get a player into the school. If your player is considering colleges like John Hopkins, Carnegie Melon, MIT, the first hurdle is getting into the school and more than likely there is a spot on the team for most players that have played competitively on a RL team. But I will agree things are changing. With the shift in D1 recruitment to foreign players, the change in rules for transfer players, and the new NCAA rules that limit D1 soccer programs to 28 rostered players, there is now a large pool of high-level players available for D3 colleges to choose from. I think the quality of D2/D3 soccer is going to increase and be much more competitive with D1 programs over the coming years, especially for those D2/D3 colleges that can keep their better players from transferring to the D1 programs. I have talked to college coaches that are recruiting, and they do look at RL players, but they are more likely to find a competitive player from a RL team that is highly competitive from a well-coached academy year after year. Coaches have given me local examples of this and they are second teams from Arlington, Pipeline, Bethesda.
