| GFR’s footprint includes the wealthiest area in VA, maybe all of the DMV. The 3 closest High Schools have won boys state championships in VA’s highest classification in recent years (Langley in ‘22, Herndon in ‘25, South Lakes in ‘19), despite having a number of high level players that attend private schools in VA and DC. GFR has attracted some of the most experienced coaches in the area in recent years, in GD, MW, NM, etc. They have neighboring clubs of Herndon and Valor that aren’t exactly tearing it up. It’s a real failure that this club is contracting and wasn’t able to take advantage of the changing landscape over the past couple of years. |
Where did the state champ Herndon HS players play? With Herndon club? |
No. And the SLHS players didn’t play for GFR in 2019. My son was on that team and it was mostly Loudoun, Arlington and McLean players. Having wealthy people in a town or towns does not produce amazing soccer players. Strong clubs that have been chucking for decades does. GFR is still in its infancy compared to those 3 clubs. |
Yes - A number of Herndon High’s players either played for Herndon or moved to VDA — after Herndon partnered with VDA. There is a lot of talent in Reston, Herndon, and Great Falls - and there has been for decades and decades. Reston Soccer was stacking state cups throughout the 80s, 90s, 00s - when they meant something. GFR just can’t manage their way out of a paper bag and, for whatever reason, many of you want to give them a pass. |
Is Reston Soccer the club before merged with Great Falls? If so, when did RS join? Pre or post merger? New to timeline and what changes came at same time the stacking stopped. |
You can not compare the current landscape of travel soccer to the 80's or 90's. Kids were going to play college soccer back then without every even ever playing club soccer! |
Yes, it was Reston that merged with Great Falls. RS was the the TD at Reston before the merger. |

What people fail to realize is that European kids who play and develop under professional coaches/teams hit 17-18 years old, see that they're not going pro.
They decide to come to the USA, go to college for free and are top level talent here (starters). When in the 90s you had a couple of international players on D1 rosters, now you have the majority Just take a look at local schools and I'm not even talking about TOP schools who used to get international players in the 90s. You have small schools like Radford - 12 out of 28 are international players Longwood - 18 of 30 GMU - 15 of 27 This is for the boys side. |
Almost all the boys on the Herndon HS wining team from the spring played soccer for Herndon club. The head coach is the TD at Herndon club. |
A pp said it’s unfair to compare GFR to other clubs because they are “new”. My point is they really aren’t. Reston has a rich soccer history. I agree that the landscape is different, but that has nothing to do with the inability of GFR to compete well versus other local clubs, and has nothing to do w/ college soccer and the number of Intl players now playing college. |
| Who became vp of fields |
Your first sentence is true but not the second. The Herndon HS head coach is not affiliated with HYS. |
Nick Arzani? Yes, he is the TD at HYS but I don't think he is on the coaching staff at HHS anymore. |
This is old post from 2023 for NCAA but I remembered it when came out as was surprised- shows % of intl players https://x.com/ImCollegeSoccer/status/1724762780358660455?lang=en |
Correct. Someone else coaches Herndon HS. |
