| I am confused about dynamics of the senate now. Democrats supposed to be the majority. So, why are Republicans till have committee chairmanships for cabinet confirmation. How does it exactly work? |
| Mitch is flexing. |
How can he is my question? |
From what i gather, he is filibustering the rules of organization in order to demand that Schumer vow not to get rid of the filibster no matter what happens. |
| They are still operating under the rules of the previous Senate, 2019-20, which was under GOP control and ergo had GOP chairmen. This is holding up legislative business and slowing nominee hearings since its the chairmen who call for hearing dates, etc. One committee's chairman has now retired, (the Health cmte) so the HHS nominee can't even have a hearing yet because no one is in charge of the committee to order one up. |
| Schumer wants to continue to operate under the old rules, McConnell wants a guarantee that schumer won't kill the filibuster. |
Seriously. I get why McConnell was a threat when he was Majority Leadership. But what IS THIS? Schumer is Majority Leader. He has the power to set Committee Chairs, decide to bring bills up to vote, and assorted other crap. McConnell never ever gave an inch. He even lied - anyone recall Merrick Garland vs Amy Coney Barrett's confirmation? WHY are the Senate Democrats letting him run roughshod over this? Why don't the Dems let him filibuster for 15 hours or however long he can stand, have him pass out, and vote in the Rules of Organization?
|
| Chuck Schumer just does not have any balls and never has. Find someone else! Someone who will put Mitch in his place! |
In this case - I agree. Why is he the leader? Who is the equivalent of Governor Cuomo in the Senate Democrats? |
What does it mean? Filibustering the rules of organization cannot last forever, right? Democrats should not give an inch. But why are there GOP chair for the committees? |
+1 I have been thinking this all day and thought maybe I wasn’t understanding Senate rules or something. We’ve had to deal with McConnell obstructing Obama from getting any legislature passed and then ramming Trump’s agenda down our throats. Why can’t the Dems get a backbone and play hardball? I’m getting sick of this. |
Trying to get Sanders and Manchin on the same page is harder than getting a few Republicans to vote with you. In order the get a few Republicans to vote with you you can’t ram or play hardball. You have to cajole and finesse. Hopefully, in two years, we will have more wiggle room. |
| We could easily lose the Senate in two years. Maybe even the house. |
And we more than likely will. |
| Democrats are being outmaneuvered. Again. |
