Any reason why not to name her Cosette?

No, not French. And the musical is 35 years old now (the book nearly 160 years old).

I just love the name.

The only reason is because it's not my taste.

I’m French and that name is really tied to the book (what musical? Just kidding). That might be fine with you, but it wouldn't work for me.

What about Camille? Clementine? Chloe? All French “k” names.

I mean, even in the novel it's a nickname (her given name is Euphrasie). And people will connect it to the musical; it wasn't used as a first name until after the novel. But if that doesn't bother you, I guess there's not a huge reason not to.

Agree with the above. What about a name like Lisette, if it’s the ending of the name that you like?

This is the sort of name you love when you’re full of pregnancy hormones, and later remember from time to time and think “thank god we didn’t name her that”.

I always liked it and I know someone who has this as a middle name and it fits her. If you like it that much, why not?

Because it's not even a real name. No French person is called Cosette.

Try Colette, Claudette, Antoinette, Annette.

I think it comes down to how annoyed you will be when people inevitably ask about the character from the book/musical, as well as how much it will bother you that people will definitely judge your for it.

I always loved the name Miranda -- it's so musical and I love the way it rolls of the tongue. But whenever I mentioned it, people would say "like Sex & the City?" Plus numerous people have compared me to that character in my life (because I am a lawyer, I'm tall and thin, and have a similarly acerbic sense of humor). But my love of the name has zero to do with the show -- I watched it casually but was never particularly into it. I just really love the name. But ultimately I decided that other people's association with the show annoyed me too much to use the name. It would have irked me every time someone brought it up. And yes, I know people's association with the show would have faded, but there is no way to know when and I just didn't want to deal with it.

So you have to ask yourself how you will feel about the association when it comes up, how you will respond, and how you will recommend your daughter responds. If you are comfortable with it, go for it! If not, find a name without such strong cultural associations.

I grew up with someone's whose last name was Cosette (they were French Canadian) so it just doesn't seem like a first name to me. Colette is nice.

Not Cosette. It means “little thing”.

I liked Miranda also, but we didn’t use it because of its association with “Miranda warnings.”
