I'd love recommendations for an app or video. I'm a 40+ woman who would like to tone up a bit and lose some weight. I've run for years but am not in great shape shape at the moment (Sadly, I always give up during DC summers) to give you an idea of baseline I am looking forward to running again as it gets cooler but would like to add some strength training exercises and think it would be better to follow a 20-30 min video than just do stuff myself. I have access to weights.
Thanks in advance! |
| I use an app called apptiv which I love. You can get a free trial for 30 days, and after that I think it is about $100 for the year. It has tons of strength training workouts that vary in length from 5 minutes to an hour. It also has barre, pilates, outdoor runs (which I love), yoga, stretching, meditation. There are also different challenges/workout programs you can pick. It has been great for me because it keeps me motivated and pushes me to do things I’d never otherwise do (like burpees). It is mostly audio only workouts, with graphics of the moved if you need them, which I actually really love because I can do it anywhere and don’t have to be watching something. They also are adding more video based workouts. |

| I just signed up for Beachbody because I a friend has done it for a while and loves it. I was a little skeptical because I love my live zoom workouts, but didn't think I would like pre-recorded stuff. I actually really love it. I'm doing a program now called Muscle Burns Fat, which has a lot of strength training. I paid $160 for a year's worth of access to all of the online workouts (there are a ton of them), plus some add-ons included like a month of shakes, a water bottle, jump rope, portion control containers. I'm really impressed so far and am looking forward to checking out some of the other programs when I finish this one. |
| Thanks, all. I'll check into these options. |
| I like the Peleton app for strength training. I got it for the bike and the running, but found it great for strength and yoga too. |
| I have never tried any of the apps others mention, but I love Body Pump by Les Mills. I took their classes in person, and have now bought their monthly, streaming plan at around $10/month. They do frequent repititions of lightweights. Music is great and I think you could increase the weight if you were looking more at strength-training. |

Thanks for the suggestions. So many apps! I am on a tight budget and it feels a bit overwhelming to figure out a good “get back into shape” version. Any one have a good site that compares and or thoughts on considerations for a getting back into daily fitness after a break and kids and l

+1. I’m new to MM and have had it for a week. FWIW, I really like it - the workouts are challenging but not ridiculous. There are optional sections, so it can be 30mins - 1 hr. Every day is a different set of exercises and focus area. There’s a calendar in the app that populates your workout (you choose the number of days and what days you want to workout). It really takes the ‘thinking’ out of it and reduces my excuses to skip. It’s $20 a month. I did a few of her workouts on IG first @madeline_moves. |
| Gyms are great and it’s fun to throw a barbell around, but there is plenty of strength work you can do from your living room. My husband really likes the free Nike Training Center app and online training and I’ve been following along the last couple months with her. The videos are great and a lot of the exercises involve body weight and are what I would call ‘boot camp’ style. It’s a very functional kind of fitness and I’ve felt better about my overall strength. |
