Are your kids' teachers almost all white women?

At my child's ES, which is 60% minorities, almost all the teachers are caucasian women. She's been through three grades there. All 5 K teachers were white women. 4/5 of the 1st grade teachers were white women. All 5 2nd grade teachers were white women. And I know this is the same across the country. How can we, as a nation, change this?

I teach in DC. I’m a white woman. The first school that hired me was a very uppity school. Every teacher was white. Literally. I switched to a Title 1 school nearby and I was the only white person on my teaching team. I would say half the staff were non-white.

My kid is in an elementary school that is roughly 50% white, 25% black, 15% Asian and 10% Hispanic. All of the school’s teachers are either white or black, mostly white though. The school psychologist is Asian. Almost all women.

The high prevalence of white females in education, particularly at the elementary level, is pretty well-documented.

All white women for 2 kids through elementary with the exception of two male teachers- Asian and caucasian.

I agree we should change it so that 50% of teachers are men, as this would be properly representative.

Most teachers are middle aged, black females and a few younger white women, and a couple of men.

No. That is strange. And that was not my experience growing up going to DC schools either. Where do you live and what kind of school does your kid go to? I think a lot of times teachers are black.

For ES teachers, my kids have had majority white women, but also white men, black women, one black man, Latinx, South Asian. No Asians. It’s a diverse school in both staff and student body.

DD is in public school in San Francisco.

Her K through 5th grade teachers were all white women. The male principal was gay, the male gym teacher was black, the male after-school counselor whose group she was in was gay, and I can't remember any of her other teachers. Oh, her computer teacher was a guy, married to her 3rd grade teacher.

Middle school - I don't really remember most of her teachers there. The Assistant Principal was gay, one of her math teachers was Asian, and I think she had a mix of male and female teachers.

High school - big mix of genders and sexuality in teachers, but majority are white.

Yes, all the ES teachers were white women. Thankfully, this got more diverse in middle and high school.

No, mostly black. Our school is maybe 50-50 black and white. I realize this is unusual, though. The black teachers were simply amazing, btw.

OP here - this is in a very diverse part of Fairfax County (Title I school)

Why is it a problem that your teachers are mostly white women?
