The Queen has consistently failed to understand the emotional needs of anyone in her family, with truly devastating effects: Margaret, Charles, Diana, and now Harry and Meghan. She's all duty and stoicism, but those admirable attributes come with a real blind spot toward others. Because she has such power over her family members' personal lives, this causes repeated crises in the BRF.

I like and admire the Queen, but gosh, you'd think she'd learn by now to listen and take seriously when her loved ones express real human, emotional needs.

I don't know how true to life this was, but there's an episode of the new season of The Crown where the Queen goes to a mining community in Wales after a mining disaster kills over 100 schoolchildren. She basically admits to someone in that episode that she lacks the capacity for empathy.

What is true about that disaster is that she herself had to be forced to visit, much like when Princess Diana died and she was silent for a week.

You do know the Crown is fiction

You know you could read the post where the person outright says that.

We are actually two different posters. I wrote the post about the Crown being fiction but curious about any rumors that might have inspired the writer. I did not write the post quoted here.

There are two of us clearly intrigued about that episode!

Google it, there are a few interesting articles about Aberfan and the Queen's response. I think the part from the Crown that was actually wrong was that she DID cry when she was there. Obviously that whole conversation between her and Wilson was pure speculation on the part of the filmmakers - it made for good viewing though!

When I watched that episode, I got the impression that she didn't cry during the visit but wiped her eye feigning to, because she felt like the families expected a more emotional response. Then back at the palace, she tried to cry and was only able to when she put that music on.

Anyway, I was intrigued enough to google at the time and found a really fascinating and lengthy BBC article about it, which I posted a link to on The Crown thread. That's probably where I read the bit about the Queen saying how much she regretted not going sooner.

I'm not critical of the Queen's Aberfan response at all. Her reasoning was perfectly sound. This whole idea of our leaders being comforters while people cry is a modern thing. During WWII, the royal family was acclaimed for going among the people during the Blitz and showing their calmness and ability to carry on bravely.

Just going to events every day sounds miserable. He should move on with his life. He was the spare, has been replaced with more spares so there really isn't a place for him.

ALL of them? They ALL betrayed her? How?

Only her father and sister did. I haven't see any friends say anything negative.

Not when they find out they can't keep up their billionaire lifestyles or the royal titles.

Sixty one pages.
Good grief.
I’m very happy for them. It seems they are being assaulted from the British press and from factions within the royal apparatus? I don’t understand who those people are and how they have standing, apparently it’s a thing over there.
So they are getting the hell out. They can come over to this side of the pond, and enjoy a warmer reception.

Eh. Kris Jenner looks stupid and Kim looks embarrassed. Sounds right to me.

The same place for him now as there was one, two, three years ago.

To be a prince. Not a baby.

Correct. He has always been sort of floating along - and headstrong Meghan pushed him into making a decision.

Time will tell if that was the right or wrong decision for him.

I do think he comes off as spoiled and ungrateful, though.

Good for her for encouraging her husband to create his own path in life. Maybe he needed her support to know its ok. He has a family and his own life. He is not going to be king. Neither is spoiled or ungrateful. In other countries, grandchildren not in immediate line are losing their titles, funding and place if you read CNN so he is probably following their lead. He should be able to choose his life now that William has his kids. Before his kids, he was the spare. Now he has been replaced and no true purpose.

Of course it's disrespectful. Quoting an earlier post:

It appeared that Harry had a great relationship with Will and Kate prior to his marriage. Could be coincidence. But I find it horribly disrespectful that Harry did not talk to his dad and especially the Queen before making the announcement public. They have supported the couple, emotionally and financially since they started dating. Meghan wouldn’t have had the wedding she had if not for the Queen, and she knew on that day what she was signing up for. I don’t begrudge them wanting to follow a different path, but Harry is a prince, has enjoyed the lavish lifestyle his whole life, and he could have handled this in a much kinder and respectful way. It’s just a slap in the face to the Queen, the taxpayers that funded his lifestyle, and his heritage in general. IMO, Meghan is leading this whole thing, but I don’t see how you can make your own way financially, until you repay what you’ve taken advantage of as an adult. Show a little grace and gratitude to your family.

No one really knows what the relationship is like as who really knows what goes on behind closed doors. He is not in the immediate line so it really doesn't make sense to have him play a royal when he's basically been ousted. He deserves a life.

I’m sure Harry’s trust is just fine.

I've not been following closely, but this is basically what my friends and social circle are saying on social media. This whole thread is an outlier. I'm assuming it's drawing more conservative people and just general haters.

They have said ad nauseam they will not skip him. It is not up for debate.

I'm not surprised. I really don't understand the viciousness against her by people that will never speak to her or be effected by anything she does.

Harry was never going to marry you - get over it!
