That is a very good thing for you. There are plenty of IAC schools to choose from and they are relatively easy to get into. Enjoy the balance. |
We will and will also be glad to not be part of a school with stuck up people like you. |
IAC family here, and we turned down STA. We didn't even consider schools like Sidwell, GDS and Maret for a variety of reasons. |
Maret is very good in basketball but the school has mad a big push in the past 3 years to bring in recruits. |
They were. Those guys moved on. Basketball is very different in that you can change a team overnight just by bringing in 2 kids, etc. Maret had a pretty good team the past few years, but don't pretend that they were "very good". They would get killed in the WCAC. |
Yes, you are right. I am guessing the poster is referencing the DC City championships in cross-country, which the Sidwell boys' team did win, I think. They did have a nice fall sports season overall, it seemed like. I honestly don't know what makes (presumably) otherwise sane adults become so crazy about sports at their childrens' high schools. |
Thanks for confirming my recollection -- and for doing it so graciously. I agree with you completely. My kids have gotten a lot out of sports as high school and college athletes, but parents can lose perspective on what's most important. In the long term, developing resilience, grit and the ability to work with others toward a common goal count more than a win-loss record. |
Hear, hear! |
I guess the Sidwell parents are saying: "Congratulations to the D.C. State Championship Sidwell football team!"

So, I'm not a Sidwell parent or alum. I have kids who played private school sports and, five years ago when I used to be on this board more (it was a hard addiction to break!), I tried to post a number of times to point out the strong points of the Sidwell athletic program (they beat my kids' schools in plenty of sports plenty of times, and vice versa). There was not a productive discussion -- so often when the subject is athletics, it seems -- and I was glad when the angry posting died out because it seemed overheated and unfair (and concerned only with boys' sports, which I find unpleasant in and of itself). But I remembered this crazy thread enough to want to add a postscript now that Sidwell won the D.C. State Championship in football (A Division). Congrats to Sidwell Friends on an exciting game and wonderful victory for the kids and coaches. |
Awesome. |
Here is the Washington Post guy's video of the final play -- the Eastern QB (who was fantastic) had driven his team down to the Sidwell 5 yard line with 5 seconds to play, down by 6. Sidwell defense sacked him. Both teams played really good, clean football.

It was the AA championship. In other words, the minor league championship. They would have lost by 70 to Gonzaga. |
Good thing for Sidwell that GDS has never put its resources behind a football team. |
Right -- it was the Class A title game (the big school one, in which Gonzaga will play next week, is the AA game) And every state does the same thing -- they have different state championship playoff brackets by size. Texas has over 20 state championship divisions, Virginia has 10 divisions. What's your beef, Grinch? Here's a link to the Post coverage, they've got some nice photos. https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/highschools/sidwell-friends-hangs-on-to-beat-eastern-claim-first-dcsaa-title/2015/11/28/f9b70e28-956e-11e5-a2d6-f57908580b1f_story.html |
