Most summer swim kids are under age 12. Most year round kids are the older kids and they continue to swim with their year round team. Its sad how parents are so entitled they cannot put the younger kids safety first. And, 12 and up are just allowed to be vaccinated so they will not be fully vaccinated by the time swim season starts.

Lol I’m guessing you aren’t actually a part of this area’s swim culture. There are plenty of kids under 12 that are year round swimmers. There have not been outbreaks linked to swim practice or meets, which were held indoors during the worst of Covid times. Please stop fear-mongering or just don’t have your child participate this summer.

Yes, we are. We have 1-2 kids per lane and the only meets are in VA for entitled parents and kids. With no restrictions it’s a huge risk for kids. You may not care but some of us do.

So isn’t the answer just to not have your kid participate then? Or you don’t want to have to explain to your kid why Joey is doing swim team this summer while you are making him sit at home? If so, that’s a you problem, not a problem for larger community.

Thanks MCSL. Like most governing bodies, you are out of touch and suck at your jobs.

I am pretty close to this also. Our kid is only 7 but would potentially be swimming A meets in one or two strokes and B meets for the rest. But how much fun will he get sitting distanced in a mask for hours twice a week to swim a few laps?

Hard to understand the MCSL position here.

Wouldn’t the most appropriate course of action for the MCSL be to follow the CDC guidelines? Meaning vaccinated individuals unmasked and those kids unvaccinated in masks until they reach the lanes where they are 6 feet apart and can unmask for the race?

Have teams collect vaccine records with the team registration.

And if the county guidance changes, then change the guidance again. MCSL should follow the CDC and county.

Could someone who wants vaccinated individuals to wear masks please explain their thinking?

What’s sick and twisted is the board says we should thank them for even being able to have meets. Even though meets could be held without their stupid waiver and fascist meet policies. They seem to think that swimming glorified time trials is what everyone wants and that the swimming piece is what mcsl is about. Mcsl is about the cheers, the spirits, the crowds behind lanes, the lines at the snack bar, the crowded clerk of course area, the chaos of warmups, kids on each other’s shoulders, biting the relay cards. To the board it’s about swimming and the times, to the swimmers parents and coaches and coaches it’s about everything but that and that’s the shame in this whole thing.

We should all be fearful though, the board warned that cyber bullying is not ok and they will report us because trying to usurp their authority is bullying

Please explain how having vaccinated adult spectators puts unvaccinated children at risk OUTDOORS.

Please explain how having food sales outdoors puts unvaccinated children at risk.

FWIW I have two children under 12 who will be swimming. Neither of them would do a swim meet if my wife or I weren’t there helping them - remember, once the swimmers enter the swim area they cannot leave. I’m sure there are tons of parents with 8 and under swimmers in the same boat.

I have no problem with individual pools having stricter rules than the county if that’s what their Board/HOA dictates. But having a one size fits all approach is nuts.

The vaccines are not a cure. They are to reduce the impact on you. Food sales are not an issue. Kids next to each other unmasked is especially for large teams. Not all adults are fully vaccinate.

Using your logic of vaccines aren’t a cure but are only to reduce the impact on you, there should then be restrictions on everything during the fall and winter when other non lethal illnesses are at their peak, but of course there aren’t. The science is pretty clear that outdoor transmission is very difficult. No less than Dr. Leana Wen says that her child has unmasked outdoor play dates. But sure if MCSL wants to have the theater of making kids wear masks outside, have at it. How does that at all impact allowing adult spectators? Meets do not start for another month. All adults were eligible to start getting the vaccine the first week of April, so all adults that wanted a vaccine when they became available will be fully vaccinated by mid June. If you for some reason aren’t, then feel free not to attend.

We are talking about teams that have 200 or more kids plus families. You may be irresponsible but not all of us are and your choices are why some of us feel it’s unsafe. No masks, unvaccinated kids in close proximity, right, what possibly could go wrong.

outdoors at a swim meet? Very very little. Its not 'irresponsible' to follow CDC guidance and want our children to have a normal summer. Indeed, at this point I think the people crying that it is 'to soon' or the ones being irresponsible- irresponsible about the major costs of all the precautions that are just theater and have no benefit.

Masks make a difference and are required for unvaccinated people. Most teens will not be fully vaccinated by the start nor kids under 12. They deserve protection.

You have the right to make whatever choices you want for your family, but masking outdoors is not something unvaccinated people need to do per medical professionals.

DP here, trying to get caught up. What is the state and county allowing at outdoor meets regarding masks and those unvaccinated?

Honestly, I give the board credit in working with the county and others back in February and March to come up with a set of rules that let us know in early April that we would have some semblance of a swim season, because at that time it wasn’t certain. But now they are just being obstinate.

Parents are not allowed on deck for club swimming and 8 and unders do just fine. Parents need to let their snowflakes go in this area and just accept that we can not have spectators this year. Your kids have years of swim team left.

DP here, trying to get caught up. What is the state and county allowing at outdoor meets regarding masks and those unvaccinated?

In Maryland at the state level there are no more COVID restrictions other than masks on public transportation and in schools, doctors offices and day care centers. Businesses are free to have restrictions and enforce them, but the state is not mandating them. As of May 28th, so right before the start of MCSL practices, MoCo will follow the state rules instead of having its own set of more stringent rules. Again, businesses (and things like MCSL) can make their own restrictions, but that is their choice and isn’t mandated.

Right. Why is MCSL making up their own rules and second-guessing the CDC? How does it make sense that Camden Yards can operate at capacity with 40k spectators but we can’t hold a B meet or a A meet with observers?

I think the thought was it would be too hard to force businesses to police who was and wasn’t vaccinated, so they decided to just lift the restrictions and allow individual businesses to decide for themselves how they wanted to handle it.

The board of the MCSL is a complete joke. No idea that it’s about the community and the fun; the pool is only the vehicle to get to that. Just an embarrassment of thinking and leadership. You are driving so many people away from what was once such a powerful community building tool with your idiotic procedures. It’s like they can’t see past their collective nose on this thing....

I forgot about the kids biting the corners off of relay cards. Thank you for reminding me. It sounds so silly but those traditions are awesome. That is when my kid fell in love with swimming. I hope they can still do things like that.

It feels like there are several layers of disagreement going on here. The MCSL current regulations are far more stringent than the state of Maryland and MoCo. There seems to be disagreement and confusion about the rules for unvaccinated kids but can’t we all agree that vaccinated individuals shouldn’t be limited, per the CDC (if you want to wear a mask - fine your choice). Thinking about our pool, there will be a significant number of kids fully vaccinated by time trials. Would be nice for them to unmask. And also coaches and parent volunteers. I would be happy to submit my vax card to stay out of a mask. Also, 10,000 people at Preakness. Probably okay to have 200 at a swim meet. Feels like a lot of cutting our our nose to spite our face. Without the fun, MCSL will die...
