This is a person hell bent on keeping her blinders on. The good: Universal literacy. Solid free public school education. Solid free university education with guaranteed job placements. Ample choice of almost-free, high-quality extracurriculars for school-age children. The arts. Chess. Ballet. Science. Classical music and opera made available to the wider public. Excellent public transit systems. Pedestrian-friendly urban design. Free or almost-free childcare. Free healthcare (at the time). Mind you, I'm not defending the system or saying there was nothing bad. There was plenty that was bad. But there were good things, too. |

You’re on shaky ground if you think there was a single incident perpetrated by capitalists. British East India Company, Dutch East India Company, Belgian Congo...all based on capitalism. Slavery was a capitalist endeavour - slaves weren’t brought over from Africa for idealistic reasons; it was purely economic. Continents if people were disenfranchised and subjugated for economic reasons. |
