Universal literacy. Solid free public school education. Solid free university education with guaranteed job placements. Ample choice of almost-free, high-quality extracurriculars for school-age children. The arts. Chess. Ballet. Science. Classical music and opera made available to the wider public. Excellent public transit systems. Pedestrian-friendly urban design. Free or almost-free childcare. Free healthcare (at the time).

Mind you, I'm not defending the system or saying there was nothing bad. There was plenty that was bad. But there were good things, too.
