Diversity, equity, inclusion but not for Jews?

The whataboutism here is so damn typical.

This thread isn’t about you— it’s about Jews.

Really? Did you have any elderly relatives with numbers tattooed on their arms? Imagine telling them the "dominant white Christian culture" had a positive view of them.

Interesting how the Jewish experience is often diminished and cannot be recognized specifically because it's somehow not worthy enough for the "Olympics of oppression."

Same with indigenous populations.

PP from Indiana here - the one who'd never (knowingly) met a Jewish person until college. (Never knowingly met a gay person until then either now that I think of it although at least 2 of my classmates have come out as gay since then, but I digress.

Jewish people were very much seen as 'model minorities' where I grew up. Although horrible things were done to Jewish people in Europe, Jewish people were seen as overcoming adversity, clever, educated, successful and cultured. People in my community were/are big supporters of Israel - Israel is tough, scrappy and admirable. Jews were/are the antithesis of Arabs and Blacks. No one would think twice about Jews moving into the community (what a great opportunity to help them accept Jesus as their savior) but Blacks.....well, the 'dominant white Christian culture' of my community didn't see Blacks as 'model minorities'.

Oy.

Are you a joke?? Do you honestly mean to describe GEONOCIDE as "although horrible things were done to Jewish people in Europe." How (truly) ignorant you are and you seriously need to learn more about the Holocaust as well as anti-Semitism centuries and centuries before that. Get yourself educated, please!

"Reich began by explaining that anti-Semitism is often considered the world’s longest form of hatred; it has existed for over two millennia. He discussed how anti-Semitism was avoided in public during the decades following the Holocaust, but it still remained prominent in private. Recently, anti-Semitism is being expressed more overtly. He cited recent incidents in Europe, like the burning of synagogues, the desecration of Jewish cemeteries, and violent attacks targeting Jews to highlight the rise of global anti-Semitism."

Yup.

It’s also one of the most widespread forms of hatred today. According to the ADL, 1.09 billion people harbor anti-Semitic viewpoints. Not in 1945 — today.

And that’s despite there only being about 15-18 million Jews in the world.

So, instead of understanding the dangers of the 'model minority' construct, you are outraged that I didn't adequately describe the Jewish experience in Europe. Got it. I can see how difficult having a discussion, any discussion, with you would be. Nevermind that I was describing how rural midwesterners in the late 20th century viewed this 'model minority group' - midwesterners that form a strong, solid, dependable base for right wing Republicans and who would view converting Jews to Christianity as their duty. Nevermind how the 'model minority' construct harms all minority groups and impedes progress.

Oh, and what was done to the Native American population was also "horrible". My rural community would have had no problem welcoming them to the area but would have seen them as 'exotic/other' and bombarded them with insensitive and ignorant questions. Romantic relationships would have been just as discouraged with them as they would have been with Jewish people. Native Americans would have been too dark, Jewish people aren't Christian. Having a romantic relationship with a black person was outright banned.

BTW - my DH is nearly half Native American. Got the DNA results to prove it. Yet, he has no cultural or tribal affiliation. His side of the family is part of the lost generations that were forcibly assimilated. My family didn't object to our relationship. He looks Italian (not Spanish, of course) and is Catholic. There was some concern that I'd convert to Catholicism but I have no interest in that and we were not married in the Catholic church.

It’s never about Jews. The conversation immediately has to shift to “But [other minority group]! But Palestine!” No one will have a conversation about antisemitism until Jewish blood is actually dripping from the walls. Then it’s five minutes before the conversation shifts back again.

It’s never about Jews. The conversation immediately has to shift to “But [other minority group]! But Palestine!” No one will have a conversation about antisemitism until Jewish blood is actually dripping from the walls. Then it’s five minutes before the conversation shifts back again.

Absolutely. And this is why a lot of us have given up on even trying to fight it.

Sooooo similar to how this thread was made while Asian hate crimes are on the rise with the Atlanta shooting happening this week (literal blood in the walls) but the OP thought it was fine to shift the focus to discuss...

I have no horse in this race as I am white (female) but it’s interesting to watch how Jewish threads pop up here after every significant conversation about race. I remember one after the BLM events. And then someone mentioned whataboutism. Makes me wonder.

So when is the right time to care about anti-semitism?

It surely wasn’t after the Tree of Life shooting. Did you give a shit then? Didn’t think so.

We get it. You’ll always pat us on the head and say “not your time.”

Meanwhile, we’ve been dealing with rising anti-Semitism for years and haven’t been included in the left’s approved minority groups for allyship.

Maybe look at the comments in this thread regarding that. Maybe search and see if it was discussed. Did you? Didn’t think so.

I only need to look at the comments to know that no one gives a shit.

I see different but continue whatever this is, while the Atlanta shooting victims families haven’t even buried them yet. You know, since it happened Tuesday. Talk about not caring and trying to shift the convo.

^That wouldn't have been an issue if he had pulled out a large crucifix and bible.

Because these are familiar symbols in a majority Christian country.

And these days it might because of the rise of so-called “Christians” involved in far right extremism. Plus, there was this incident in which the woman did nothing harmful:

Exactly. Couldn’t even bury the dead until she redirected the convo

Unless its a synagogue attacked you don't hear about people being discriminated against in hiring practices or home buying or on the streets because they're Jewish. No one knows you're Jewish.

Certainly heard of it during Nazi Germany.
