Many colleges give scholarships based on an essay. Too bad you're not aware of these possibilities!

Name one college that gives full tuition for 4 based on an essay. Seriously, I am curious.

16:15 here, I actually know a student at WUSTL who earned a full-tuition scholarship.

Based solely on an essay and no other qualification?

He got the scholarship based on an amazing essay that he wrote. I’m so proud of him. And I want to encourage everyone to chill out a little about “best” schools. His friends are worried they’ll fail life if they don’t go to an Ivy. Meanwhile, he’ll be graduating debt free.

Can you explain when in the process he wrote the essay and under what circumstances?

My kids got a full ride. All expenses paid for college. This is not something we share with ANYONE. People are struggling a LOT to pay for college for their kids. They don’t need to hear about yours. Congrats and all that but this is not news to share.

+1000. Well $400,000. 2 kids.

Most of these scholarship gems are to relatively low ranked schools. Most of DCUM would never go to these schools. That said, there are respectable schools that offer substantial merit, but full rides at selective schools are very rare. If OP’s kid got a full ride to a selective school, we’d know the name of the school. In fact, these schools publicize and celebrate their scholarship scholars. No need to hide.

Op, I think this is the right place— you aren’t truly bragging bc no one knows you. But sadly, it’s a shame if friends IRL wouldn’t be happy for you! With that said, would you mind sharing stats for your so-called ‘average’ kid (I suspect they aren’t that average lol) and maybe some peer colleges just to give the rest of us an idea? I understand not wanting to name specifically.

I ask only bc I’m hopeful my below average kid has a shot at going to college at all...

This is not the first gloat about full ride to mediocre school post this season. OP, good for your child, getting a full ride at a school where folks would only send their kids if it’s free.

Wow! Y’all are ridiculous, you know that? Are you actually adults posting here? You seriously look down on all the kids- thousands of kids-who go to “mediocre schools...where folks would only send their kids if it’s free”? You know those kids are going to go to college, have fun, learn some stuff and then become adults, get jobs and have regular adult lives- just like your kids! When you’re an adult no one cares where you went to college! I have friends who went to Ivies, SLACS, community Colleg and everything in between. No.one.cares. Please get over yourselves. Honestly.

Op here. I am not naming the school because it is very small. Think Eckerd college, New College, Appalachian State, Kalamazoo. I think these are analogous. A school that is not particularly selective but is a really good fit for my kid and has lots of unique opportunities. The essay was written during the application process but could have been written any time before the scholarship deadline which was separate from the application deadline. It was a scholarship that had to be specifically applied for. It was based on the essay but had minimum gpa and maximum income ($175000) requirements. The rest of the overall application was also considered to evaluate whether the student aligned with the values of the college. Average student=3.0 gpa and no test scores. Some intense extracurriculars.

+1. It is amazing how snobby DCUM can be! I am happy for all these kids, esp the ones who like OP’s child got a full ride somewhere. That’s something to celebrate! My kid is going to UMBC and I’m sure that the DCUMers look down on that but she’s happy about it! Congrats, OP.

Can't you be happy for another parent?? Congratulations OP. Your kid's hard work has been rewarded. You are right to feel proud of him.

This site does not only have to be for sharing struggles. It is the modern equivalent of the town square.

This post from a "normal" family will likely give many others hope.

You are very smart to keep this quiet.

I won a full ride to college a decade ago and it was published in the local paper. Fifteen years later, I've been told in job interviews that "someone so privileged doesn't need this job, honey. You got a full ride! Why do you want to work?" by people from the area who still remember. It is like winning the lottery and the resentment it fosters will follow you around if it gets out.

I'm a trained teacher, btw, so these comments were made in that context. Experiences may vary depending on the industry.

For the posters who are given hope by this thread that full rides await that perfect essay - sorry, not a thing. Great grades and scores and EC’s plus a great essay. Sure, fine. But this thread is nonsense.
