Apparently some people prefer antisocial injustice.

No, some people recognize that some SJW tactics are antisocial. You can agree with the message and work for social justice, and also not want to be anywhere near some of the messengers whose behavior you find counterproductive to the cause.

This. It is a misconception that you have to be an "SJW" (shouting down anyone who disagrees with you, demanding your college cancel classes until it meets your demands, protesting a bakery they tried to protect themselves from your classmates' shoplifting, etc.) to care about social justice. I care deeply about social justice and working towards a more just society -- I just cringe at the tactics of say, the average Oberlin student, as a way to get there.

What are the tactics of an average Oberlin student? I went to Wesleyan and I would say that the average student is not what the stereotype is so I wonder if you are referring to a small portion of the Oberlin student body.

this is probably what pp is referring to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gibson%27s_Bakery_v._Oberlin_College

My child is a senior at Oberlin and is not a SJW type. She's typical college liberal but not really political. Her friends are all the same. The bakery thing is WAY overblown by people who have nothing to do with Oberlin. Also this event happened before any of the current students were at the school. I agree with the Wes alum above who says the average student is not the stereotype.

The students involved in the bakery incident may not represent the majority of the Oberlin student body, but the problem is that the Administration promoted, and continues to defend, their actions. One member of the Administration was directly involved. A jury found this to be the case, and awarded $25 million in damages to the bakery owners, which Oberlin has appealed. Oberlin gave into student demands that they attempt to destroy a family business, and is still litigating to avoid having to make the bakery owners whole. Read the Oberlin web site. They still have not admitted that they, or the students, did anything wrong.

You are either not paying any attention to what is going on at these campuses, or this is gaslighting of the highest order.

What does preppy even mean anymore? For the purpose of this thread.

You talk as if it’s a political movement. Is it?

I can’t understand why any balanced young adult would be afraid of proximity to khaki pants and pearls and boat shoes. So clearly “preppy”’ has taken on all new meaning in the last 5-10 years while I wasn’t paying attention. Someone define “preppy” with enough specifics so I can understand how it morphed from its original meaning

Not the OP but guessing they mean either a rich prep school feel and/or uber sporty lax bro feel?

This isn’t specific.

DC goes to Berry and I've been really impressed with it.

The school is very service oriented. While it's emphasis on educating heads, hearts, and hands is probably not uncommon in colleges, I think the extent that it is embraced by both faculty and students is.

The work study program is specially designed so that students assume greater responsibility during their time at Berry and many will get management experience. While not required, almost everyone participates.

Although the enrollment is relatively small (about 2100), the campus is huge, which my nature loving DC adores. There's a strong sense of community on campus. They cherish their traditons (ex. Mountain Day).

Berry has a beautiful, expansive campus, but its location stinx. Rome, GA, is a pit. The school also isn't super progressive, which is what the OP's kid wants.

Oglethorpe in the Buckhead area of Atlanta would be a much better fit, in terms of both location and campus climate. It's in the most bomb part of the ATL — if you're not familiar with the city, downtown is nothing more than a bland collection of buildings where the sidewalks roll up at 6pm; Buckhead and Midtown are where the action is — and the student body is very liberal and into all that social justice jazz. Check it out.

I think you need to go back and re-read the op.

OP all I can say is do it soon. The SJW thing at LACs is not helpful unless you want to: teach in under privileged area, work fir a non profit, or don’t need to work at all.

I’d choose Skidmore. Less isolated, nice town, easier to get secure internships in business (NYC) and gov (Albany) or
the arts (SPAC).

But Bates has the NESCAC designation, which helps.

Bates is much better known
Anonymous
Not so much.

In the NYC area, Skidmore is just as well known as Bates.
Anonymous
Any LAC in the south, except for those in Asheville NC are pretty much more conservative.

That is pretty limiting. I am from the Midwest and I am aware of Skidmore but Bates is regarded as a better school and most people probably haven’t heard of Skidmore.
